01 · The section

Four collections, 95 guides, and the one step every single one of them ends at

This section covers the parts of a house you have to measure before you can buy anything. Pool holds 35 guides on salt water pools. Topsoil holds 28 on buying and spreading soil. Square Feet holds 24 on area and conversions. Board Foot holds 8 on measuring lumber.

Four unrelated subjects, and the same final step in all of them. You measure something, you do a conversion, and you hand a number to a supplier. Everything before that step is arithmetic you can check. Everything after it is money.

What this page covers is the join between those two halves, because that is where the errors live and no single collection can see it. The unit you measure in is almost never the unit the thing is sold in, and in several common cases the number printed on the material is not its size at all. That is not a figure of speech. The federal standard that governs softwood lumber defines the word nominal, in its own definitions section, as the label designation for lumber size categories that does not reflect the dressed size.

The scale of what gets bought on these numbers

The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard publishes the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity, which tracks what owners spend improving and repairing homes they live in. Its May 2026 release projects annual spending growth of just 0.5 percent by the first quarter of 2027, at a level of $523 billion for the four quarters ending then. That figure is a projection rather than a historical total, and it excludes rental property, so it is worth quoting precisely rather than rounding into a headline.

One thing the Census release does not contain. There is no separate line item for residential improvements in the monthly construction spending report. The word appears once, in a footnote to Table 2 reading Includes private residential improvements. Improvements are folded into the residential total and never broken out. So a page citing a Census figure for home improvement spending is either using a different series or making it up, and the correct source for that specific number is the Harvard indicator above.

What each collection already owns, so this page does not repeat it

  • Pool owns the chemistry: that a salt water pool is a chlorine pool, what chlorine kills and how long it takes, and how salty a salt pool actually is.

This page owns the layer under all four: what the units actually mean, which of them are defined by law, which are defined by an industry committee, and which are not defined by anybody.

02 · Nominal and actual

A two by four has not measured two inches by four inches since your grandfather was buying them

Most people know this. Far fewer know the exact figures, that they are set by a federal standard rather than by habit, that green lumber is legally larger than dry lumber, or that the rule people carry in their heads breaks at eight inches wide.

The document is PS 20-25, the American Softwood Lumber Standard, published in January 2025 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for the United States Department of Commerce. It supersedes PS 20-20 Revision 1 of October 2021. Almost every lumber page online, including several trade sites, still cites an older edition.

Both tables are the minimum dressed sizes in PS 20-25, in inches. The standard adds one line that saves a lot of confusion: the thicknesses apply to all widths and all widths apply to all thicknesses.

The rule breaks at eight inches, and that is where the arithmetic goes wrong

Everybody learns that a nominal dimension loses half an inch. That is true up to nominal 6 and false from nominal 8 upward, where the loss becomes three quarters of an inch. A 2x12 is 11-1/4 inches wide, not 11-1/2. On a single joist that is a quarter inch. Across a floor laid out on the wrong figure it is a cumulative error that shows up as a gap at the last board, and it is the single most common arithmetic mistake in do-it-yourself material estimating.

Green lumber is legally bigger, and that is deliberate

PS 20-25 defines the two states precisely. Dry Lumber is lumber of less than nominal 5-inch thickness which has been seasoned or dried to a maximum moisture content of 19 percent. Green Lumber is lumber of less than nominal 5-inch thickness which has a moisture content in excess of 19 percent. Nineteen percent is the line, and it is written into the definitions rather than left to judgment.

Green stock is cut oversize because it is going to shrink. A green 2x4 leaves the mill at 1-9/16 by 3-9/16 so that when it dries it lands inside the dry tolerance. Which means two boards labeled 2x4, bought on the same day from the same yard, can legitimately differ by a sixteenth of an inch in each direction depending on how they were dried. Note also that both definitions stop at nominal 5-inch thickness. Timbers of nominal 5 inches and thicker sit under a different part of the standard with a different table, so a 6x6 is not governed by the rule above.

The standard is metric underneath. PS 20 prints its tables in millimeters with inch equivalents alongside. The board sold as a two by four is officially 38 mm by 89 mm. Neither number in the name survives the conversion, which is a fair summary of the whole topic.

03 · How it got this way

The 2x4 was thicker within living memory, and a federal report records the meeting where it shrank

The usual explanation for nominal sizing is that boards are sawn rough and then planed smooth, so a little wood is lost. That is true and it is not the whole story, because the amount lost was decided in committee, argued over for decades, and changed.

The record is a Forest Products Laboratory publication, History of Yard Lumber Size Standards, by L. W. Smith and L. W. Wood, issued by the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture in September 1964. It is worth reading if you have ever wondered why a 2x4 is the size it is.

  1. 1924. The first American Lumber Standard takes effect on 1 July. Minimum finished thickness for nominal 2-inch dimension lumber is set at 1-5/8 inches.
  2. 1928 to 1939. Revisions happen, but the report records that no changes were made affecting standard sizes. The 1-5/8 figure holds.
  3. 1953. A new standard adjusts widths. Thickness stays at 1-5/8.
  4. 1956 and 1957. A proposal to reduce thickness is put forward and defeated by opposition from the southern pine industry. Regional interests, not physics, kept the board thicker for another few years.
  5. December 1961, Scottsdale, Arizona. The General Softwood Size Committee agrees on the western proposal to move to 1-1/2 inches thick dry.
  6. 1964. The proposed standard retains 1-1/2 inches for nominal 2-inch dimension. That is the figure still in force in PS 20-25.

One eighth of an inch does not sound like much. On the cross-section of a 2x4 it is roughly eight percent of the wood, on every board, in every house built since. The change was agreed in 1961 and carried into the 1964 revision. The exact date it took commercial effect is not established in the report, and the widely repeated claim that 2x4s shrank in 1964 is a reasonable shorthand rather than a documented date.

The standard is voluntary, and that turns out not to matter

PS 20-25 says so itself, in language worth quoting because it explains the whole arrangement: The use of DOC Voluntary Product Standards is voluntary. NIST has no regulatory power in the enforcement of their provisions; however, since the standards represent a consensus of all interested groups, their provisions are likely to become established as trade customs. In addition, when a DOC Voluntary Product Standard is made a part of a legal document, such as a sales contract or code, compliance with the standard is enforceable.

So a federal agency publishes the standard and cannot enforce it. Enforcement arrives from three directions instead.

The committee has been at this longer than most federal agencies have existed in their present form. Its own history records that the first efforts to standardize lumber began in 1922 and produced the American Lumber Standard, first published in 1924, and that in 1953 a court found the committee and its independently elected Board of Review to be impartial bodies appropriate to carry out a decree. The case behind that sentence is not identified on the page and is not cited here, because it could not be traced to a docket.

Why the edition matters. PS 20 runs on a five-year review cycle, so the January 2025 edition stands until roughly 2030. A page citing PS 20-20 or PS 20-15 is citing a superseded document even where the numbers it quotes are unchanged, which is the same failure mode that runs through medical and tax content: a right number attached to a dead source.

04 · The law

In roughly 46 states it is illegal to label a board 2x4 without showing the real size nearby

This is the strongest thing on this page and almost nobody knows it. The nominal size on a piece of lumber is not a courtesy or a trade habit. It is permitted by a weights and measures regulation, on conditions, and the conditions are specific.

The document is NIST Handbook 130, Uniform Laws and Regulations in the Areas of Legal Metrology and Fuel Quality, Section IV.B, the Uniform Regulation for the Method of Sale of Commodities. The current edition is Handbook 130 for 2026, adopted by the 109th National Conference on Weights and Measures. Section 2.10 covers softwood lumber and section 2.12 covers hardwood lumber sold at retail.

Softwood: sold by piece and surfaced size, not by board measure

Under section 2.10, softwood quantity has to be stated as the number of pieces, the minimum surfaced width and thickness, and either the length of individual pieces or the lineal footage. Nominal dimensions may be used, but only if two things are both true:

  1. the term nominal or nom is also used; and
  2. the actual or minimum dressed sizes are prominently displayed to the customer, either by means of a table or a label.

The regulation gives its own worked example, in the text: a dry 2 x 4 is surfaced to the actual dimensions of 1-1/2 in by 3-1/2 in. That sentence is in the regulation, not in a guide to the regulation.

The American Wood Council, which represents the manufacturers, states that approximately 46 states have adopted the Uniform Regulation for the Method of Sale of Commodities, and describes the rule in plainer language: a 2x4 can be labeled a 2x4, but only if the label or other displays notes that 2x4 is the nominal size and prominently features the actual or minimum measurements. On paperwork, its guidance is that sellers should show invoices by actual sizes for standard sized lumber and dressed sizes for nonstandard sized lumber. The forty-six figure is the characterization of the council itself rather than a NIST count, which is why it carries the word approximately here.

The detail that gives the game away. The same trade body advises against labeling in actual sizes only, on the grounds that it is not recommended due to manufacturing variability. Read that carefully. The actual size is a minimum, not a measurement, and the industry says so. The board in your hand is at least 1-1/2 inches thick, which is a different claim from being 1-1/2 inches thick.

Hardwood: sold by the board foot, and the board foot is defined

Section 2.12 handles hardwood differently, and here the board foot is the legal unit. It is defined as the volume of a board 1 ft long, 1 ft wide, and 1 in thick or its equivalent, which the regulation states as 144 cubic inches of wood. The same nominal-disclosure condition applies: nominal dimensions are allowed only where the table of minimum surfaced sizes for kiln dried hardwood lumber, or the actual dimensions, are prominently displayed and the term nominal or nom is used.

So the answer to whether a board foot uses nominal or actual dimensions is that it depends on the species group, and the law splits them. Softwood is not sold by board measure at retail at all. Hardwood is, and hardwood board footage is conventionally computed on the rough size before surfacing.

Which is where the money actually goes

The American Hardwood Export Council publishes the surfacing losses. For hardwood up to and including 1-1/2 inches, subtract 3/16 inch from the nominal thickness. For 1-3/4 inches and above, subtract 1/4 inch. So four-quarter hardwood, nominally one inch thick, surfaces to 13/16 of an inch, and the buyer paid board footage on the full inch.

Thickness losses are the published AHEC figures. The percentages are arithmetic performed here on those figures, not published values, and they assume board footage is tallied on the rough size, which is the convention rather than a legal requirement.

Two federal definitions sitting one page apart, not reconciled

There is a second federal definition of a board foot, in an agricultural marketing rule. Title 7 of the Code of Federal Regulations, part 1217, which runs the softwood lumber research and promotion program, defines a board foot at section 1217.4 as a board 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 1 inch thick or its cubic equivalent. Ten sections later, at 1217.16, the same rule defines nominal size as the size by which softwood lumber is known and sold in the marketplace that differs from actual size.

One rule, two definitions, no reconciliation between them. The government defines the unit as a real volume of wood and, in the same document, records that the sizes lumber is known and sold by are not the actual sizes. Neither definition is wrong. They simply describe two different things that share a vocabulary, which is the theme of this entire page.

And the board foot is not a unit of measurement. NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C, is the general table of units of measurement used in the United States. It gives the gallon as 231 cubic inches, the cubic foot as 7.481 gallons and the cubic yard as 27 cubic feet exactly. The board foot is not in it. It is a trade unit defined by regulation for the purpose of selling wood, not a unit of the measurement system.

05 · Panels

Half inch plywood is not half an inch, and since 2008 the sheet carries two numbers for that reason

Sheet goods went further than lumber. Rather than keep a nominal size and a real size, the panel industry replaced the nominal thickness with something called a Performance Category, which is not a thickness at all.

The definition is in PS 1-19, Structural Plywood, effective 1 December 2019, and identically in PS 2-18, Performance Standard for Wood Structural Panels, both published by NIST for the Department of Commerce. Read it closely: a Performance Category is a panel designation related to the panel thickness range that is linked to the nominal panel thickness designations used in the International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC).

Thickness ranges from PS 2-18 Table 1. The standard applies a tolerance of plus or minus 1/32 inch for categories of 13/16 inch and smaller. The table continues up to 1-1/4 Performance Category.

The answer to the question everybody asks

People ask why half inch plywood is 15/32. The honest answer is that 15/32 and 1/2 are two separate Performance Categories with different permitted ranges, and what the store calls half inch plywood or half inch OSB is usually the 15/32 category. Its range runs from 0.438 to 0.500. A panel at the bottom of that range is 0.438 inch, a sixteenth of an inch thinner than half an inch, and it is fully compliant.

Why the industry landed on 15/32 rather than 1/2 in the first place is a separate question, and the standards documents do not answer it. The stories about veneer sanding losses and metric conversion are widely repeated and not in PS 1-19 or PS 2-18, so they are not repeated here.

What is documented is when the label changed, and why

The Engineered Wood Association records that since 2008, OSB panels are labeled with both a Performance Category, which links to nominal thicknesses used in the building codes, and a decimal thickness designation, which meets packaging and labeling regulations. The association also states that the Performance Category serves as the nominal panel thickness in building codes and is the primary designation used throughout the industry.

Two numbers on one panel, for two different audiences. And the reason is a genuine collision between two rule sets. The association notes in its own technical material that the regulations applicable to structural panels under the weights and measures regime do not permit the minus 1/32 inch tolerance that the panel standard allows. The panel standard wanted a range. The labeling law wanted a number. Dual labeling is the compromise.

What this means when you are ordering. If a detail depends on the panel actually being half an inch, for example a flush joint against dimensional lumber or a rabbet cut to a stated depth, measure the panel rather than trusting the label. If it depends only on structural performance, the Performance Category is the correct number to give the supplier, because that is the designation the code is written around.

06 · Pipe

Three plumbing materials on the same aisle, three unrelated ways of not telling you the diameter

Lumber and panels are at least consistent about being smaller than the label. Pipe is stranger: a half inch pipe is larger than half an inch on the outside and smaller than half an inch on the inside, and neither figure is 0.500.

The system is called Nominal Pipe Size, and the governing document for steel is ASME B36.10, Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel Pipe. The values below are read from three manufacturers who publish full dimension tables, because the ASME table itself sits behind a paywall. Three independent manufacturers in two different materials agree exactly, which is the point of the system: the outside diameter is fixed by the nominal size, and the wall thickness, called the schedule, eats into the bore.

Percentages are arithmetic performed here.

The rule stops abruptly at 14 inches

Below nominal 14 inches, the label never equals the outside diameter. At nominal 14 and above, it always does, exactly. A 14 inch pipe has a 14.000 inch outside diameter, a 16 inch pipe measures 16.000, and so on upward.

There is no gradual convergence toward the label as sizes increase. It is a hard discontinuity, and it is a fossil: the small sizes were built around nineteenth century iron pipe wall thicknesses and inherited those outside diameters, while the large sizes were specified later and simply took the sensible option.

Copper is a third system again

Copper water tube does not follow Nominal Pipe Size. The Copper Development Association states the rule for Types K, L and M tube in one sentence: in each case the actual outside diameter is 1/8 inch larger than the nominal or standard size. So half inch copper tube has an outside diameter of 0.625 inch, three quarter inch is 0.875, and the offset stays the same at every size instead of shrinking proportionally the way it does for steel and plastic.

Three conventions, one aisle. Steel and plastic pipe use Nominal Pipe Size, where the offset varies by size and disappears at 14 inches. Copper tube adds a flat 1/8 inch at every size, which is a different rule producing a different number. None of the figures on any of these labels is a measurement you can check with a caliper unless you already know which of the systems you are standing in.

07 · Coverage and yield

What one unit of a material actually covers, taken from the people who make it

Coverage figures are where estimating goes wrong in the other direction. Nominal sizing makes the material smaller than you thought. Coverage claims make it go further than it will, because the published number is almost always a rate under stated conditions and gets quoted as a capacity.

Concrete, where the number is unambiguous

Quikrete publishes yields per bag on its concrete mix data sheet, revised October 2022. These are the useful ones:

Yields are the published Quikrete figures for product 1101. The bags-per-cubic-yard column is arithmetic performed here, dividing 27 cubic feet by the published yield. The 27 figure is exact, from NIST Handbook 44.

That last column is the one that changes decisions. Forty-five eighty-pound bags is 3,600 pounds of material to carry, open, mix and place, and it is the arithmetic that sends most people to a ready-mix truck. The same sheet gives the strength as 2,500 psi at 7 days and 4,000 psi at 28 days, and the water requirement as approximately 6 to 9 pints per 80 lb bag.

Paint, where the number has a condition attached that nobody quotes

Take one specific product with a published data page: Sherwin-Williams ProMar 200 Zero VOC Interior Latex in eggshell, revision March 2025. Its stated coverage is 350 to 400 square feet per gallon at 4 mils wet, 1.7 mils dry.

The clause after the comma is the whole thing. That coverage is only valid at a specified film build. It is a rate, not a capacity. Spread the gallon thinner and it covers more area and fails to hide what is underneath. Spread it thicker and it covers less. The folk rule that one gallon covers 400 square feet is the top of one manufacturer range, for one product in one sheen, quoted without the film thickness that makes it true. The paint coverage guide works through the practical version, including second coats and porous surfaces.

And coverage is not regulated. Under the method of sale regulation, coatings are sold in terms of liquid measure. The gallon is the regulated quantity. The square footage on the front of the can is a manufacturer claim about performance, which is why it varies by product, by sheen, by substrate and by application method, and why substituting a figure from one product into an estimate for another is not a safe move.

Roofing, where the unit itself is defined as coverage

A square of roofing is a legal unit, and its definition is unusual enough to quote. Under the method of sale regulation, a square is the quantity of roofing material that, when applied according to the directions of the manufacturer, will cover an area of 100 square feet exclusive of side laps or side joints.

So a square is 100 square feet of coverage, not 100 square feet of material. Because shingles overlap themselves, the physical material in a square is considerably more than 100 square feet, and how much more depends entirely on the exposure the product is designed for. Which is why the most confidently repeated number in roofing is wrong.

Three bundles per square is a product fact, not a rule. It is correct for standard strip and architectural lines, including the best selling laminate shingle in the table above, and it is wrong for the designer lines sitting on the same shelf. Inside a single manufacturer catalog the figure is 3, 4 or 5. Someone ordering a five-bundle designer shingle on the three-bundle rule arrives 40 percent short. The related figure of 33.33 square feet per bundle does not appear in these specification sheets at all, because it is 100 divided by 3 and therefore only true for three-bundle products. On the four-bundle product it is 25 square feet, and on the five-bundle product it is 20. The bundle coverage guide covers the common case in detail.

08 · The overage

Add ten percent for waste. Nobody can tell you where that number came from

Every material estimate ends with the same instruction, and it is worth pulling on. Ten percent for waste, fifteen for a diagonal tile layout, twenty for a pattern repeat. It appears in retailer guides, contractor blogs and every online calculator. It does not appear in any standards document, manufacturer instruction or extension publication that could be found.

The specific error already circulating. The 5 percent tolerances in the flooring standard are allowances for how many pieces in a shipment may fall outside the stated moisture range or appearance grade. They are quality control limits on the manufacturer. They are not ordering guidance, and they are being repeated online as though they were.

Why the ten percent rule is suspect on its own terms

Set aside the missing source for a moment. The rule is size-independent, and waste is not. What generates offcuts is cut density: the number of edges, the shape of the room, whether the layout runs diagonally, how long the pattern repeat is, how many hips and valleys a roof has. A long rectangular room and an identically sized room with three doorways, a bay and a chimney breast do not waste the same fraction, and a percentage of total area cannot know the difference.

That does not make ten percent a bad working figure. It makes it a rule of thumb, and the honest thing is to say so rather than dress it up as a standard. If the layout is simple, less will do. If it is complicated, ten percent will not be enough, and the number that matters is whether the supplier still has the same dye lot in three weeks. The flooring measurement guide uses the ten percent convention, which is the sensible working choice; this section is about where it does and does not come from.

The one measured figure that exists, and its age

The closest thing to real data is a measurement rather than a recommendation. A characterization of building-related construction and demolition debris prepared for the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA530-R-98-010, published in June 1998, gives a weighted average for new residential construction of 4.38 pounds of debris per square foot. For residential renovation it reports individual project assessments ranging from 2.41 to 11.3 pounds per square foot, and notes that remodeling typically generates more waste per square foot than new construction, recommending estimation by improvement type rather than by a single per-square-foot rate.

Two cautions. That report is from 1998, so it predates a great deal of panelization and prefabrication, and it should not be presented as a current figure. And it measures debris leaving a site, which includes packaging, demolition material and damage, not only offcuts from new material. It is the best documented thing available and it is still not an answer to how much extra to order.

For current scale rather than per-project rates, the EPA estimated that 600 million tons of construction and demolition debris were generated in the United States in 2018, on a page last updated in October 2025.

The method of sale regulation runs to forty numbered commodity sections. Reading the list is more informative than reading any single section, because what is absent from it is as interesting as what is in it.

Buy a cubic yard of mulch and the unit of sale is prescribed by a regulation adopted in most states. Buy a cubic yard of topsoil from the same yard, off the same loader, and it is not. The Topsoil hub covers the separate and equally awkward question of what the word topsoil is allowed to mean, which is a definition problem rather than a unit-of-sale problem, and the two gaps compound.

Insulation is the exception that shows what the rule could look like

Insulation is the one residential material where the law forces the manufacturer to print the coverage number rather than leaving the buyer to work it out.

  • Packaged loose-fill, non-cellulose. The label must declare the minimum thickness, maximum net coverage area, and minimum weight per square foot at R values of 11, 19 and 22.
  • Packaged loose-fill cellulose. The label must declare the minimum thickness, maximum net coverage area, number of bags per 1,000 square feet, and minimum weight per square foot at R values of 13, 19, 24, 32 and 40.
  • Batt and blanket. The label must show the square feet of insulation in the package, the length and width of the batt or blanket, and the R value and thickness.

Notice what is being required. Not just the quantity in the bag, but how much area that quantity covers, at a stated level of performance, with the performance and the coverage tied together. That is exactly the calculation every other section of this page leaves to the buyer, and the reason insulation is different is that nobody buys insulation for its volume. They buy it for an R value, so the regulation makes the seller state the trade-off.

Pool water, where the unit you cannot see decides everything

Pools belong in this section for the same reason. Almost every decision about a pool runs on its volume in gallons, and the volume of a real pool with a sloping floor and curved ends is an estimate.

The Model Aquatic Health Code, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its fourth edition of February 2023, defines turnover as the period of time, usually expressed in hours, required to circulate a volume of water equal to the capacity of the aquatic venue. Turnover is defined by volume, so an error in the volume estimate propagates straight into pump sizing and into every chemical dose.

On chemistry, the CDC gives minimums rather than ranges for home pools and hot tubs: at least 1 ppm free chlorine in a pool without cyanuric acid, at least 2 ppm in a pool with it, at least 3 ppm in a hot tub, pH between 7.0 and 7.8, tested at least twice a day and more often with heavy use. The commonly quoted 1 to 3 ppm range is not the way the CDC phrases it. The Pool hub covers what chlorine actually does with that concentration and how long it takes.

Useful conversions for pool volume, from the general table of units. One gallon is 231 cubic inches exactly. One cubic foot is 7.481 gallons. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet exactly. Any pool volume formula you find, average-depth methods included, is conventional arithmetic rather than a cited standard, so treat the result as an estimate with a range rather than a figure.

Questions this section gets, with the document named

How big is a 2x4 really?

One and a half inches by three and a half inches if it is dry, meaning at or below 19 percent moisture content. One and nine sixteenths by three and nine sixteenths if it is green, above 19 percent. Those are the minimum dressed sizes in PS 20-25, the American Softwood Lumber Standard, published in January 2025.

Does every nominal size lose half an inch?

No, and this is where most estimating errors come from. Nominal 2 through 6 lose half an inch. Nominal 8 and above lose three quarters of an inch. A 2x12 is 11-1/4 inches wide, not 11-1/2.

Is it legal to sell a board as a 2x4?

Yes, on conditions. Under the method of sale regulation in NIST Handbook 130, nominal dimensions may be used only if the word nominal or nom is also used and the actual or minimum dressed sizes are prominently displayed to the customer by a table or a label. The American Wood Council states that approximately 46 states have adopted that regulation.

Does a board foot use nominal or actual dimensions?

It depends on the wood, because the law splits them. Softwood is not sold by board measure at retail at all; the regulation requires piece count and minimum surfaced dimensions. Hardwood is sold by the board foot, defined as 144 cubic inches, and hardwood board footage is conventionally tallied on the rough size before surfacing.

Why is half inch plywood 15/32?

Because 15/32 and 1/2 are two different Performance Categories, not one product with a rounding error. The 15/32 category runs from 0.438 to 0.500 inch under PS 2-18, so a compliant panel can be a sixteenth of an inch under half an inch. The historical reason the industry chose 15/32 is not stated in either panel standard, so it is not asserted here.

Why do panels carry two thickness numbers?

Since 2008, structural panels are labeled with a Performance Category, which links to the nominal thicknesses used in the building codes, and a decimal thickness, which satisfies packaging and labeling regulations. The two rule sets want different numbers, because the panel standard permits a minus tolerance that the labeling regulations do not.

What is the actual diameter of half inch pipe?

0.840 inch on the outside and 0.622 inch on the inside in Schedule 40, from published manufacturer submittal sheets. Neither figure is half an inch. Half inch copper tube is different again, at 0.625 inch outside, because copper adds a flat eighth of an inch at every size.

How many 80 lb bags of concrete in a cubic yard?

Forty-five. Quikrete publishes a yield of 0.60 cubic feet per 80 lb bag, and a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet exactly, so the division is straightforward. That is 3,600 pounds of bagged material, which is usually the number that decides between mixing and ordering.

Does a gallon of paint really cover 400 square feet?

At a specified film thickness, yes. The published figure for one common interior latex is 350 to 400 square feet per gallon at 4 mils wet and 1.7 mils dry. That is a rate under conditions, not a capacity, and it is product and sheen specific.

Is it always three bundles of shingles per square?

No. Within one manufacturer catalog it is 3, 4 or 5 depending on the product line, because a square is defined as 100 square feet of coverage rather than 100 square feet of material, and coverage depends on the exposure the shingle is designed for.

Where does the 10 percent waste rule come from?

No standards body, manufacturer instruction or extension publication could be found that publishes it. It is a trade rule of thumb, and it is size independent in a way that makes little physical sense, because waste scales with cut density rather than with total area. That does not make it a bad working figure, but it is not a standard.

Is topsoil regulated the way mulch is?

No. Mulch, peat, sod, roofing, lumber, coatings, insulation and aggregate all have numbered sections in the method of sale regulation prescribing how they must be sold. Topsoil, soil and compost have none.
