There is a bag of pool salt in the shed, weeds are pushing up through the cracks in the driveway, and the internet says salt kills weeds. It is a tempting bit of household chemistry: cheap, already paid for, and apparently free of anything scary on the label.

It does work. That is the honest starting point. But it works in a way that is difficult to undo, spreads further than you intend, and creates problems that outlast the weeds by years. The short answer

Yes, pool salt kills weeds. It is high-purity sodium chloride, and salt has been used to kill plants for as long as people have been growing them. Applied heavily, it will kill almost anything green.

The catch is that it does not stop at the weed. Salt is not consumed, does not break down, and does not stay where you put it. It sits in the soil, kills the next thing that tries to grow there, spreads sideways with every rainfall, and travels into drains, beds and groundwater. You are not applying a weedkiller, you are changing the soil.

How salt actually kills a plant

Two mechanisms, working together, and understanding them explains everything else on this page.

Osmotic stress

Roots take up water by osmosis, which needs the water outside the root to be less concentrated than the sap inside. Salty soil water reverses that gradient, so water is drawn out of the roots instead of in. The plant wilts and dies of drought while standing in wet soil — which is why the effect is sometimes described as physiological drought.

Ion toxicity

Sodium and chloride that do get taken up accumulate in the leaves. Chloride causes the leaf scorch you see at the tips and margins. Sodium also displaces potassium, calcium and magnesium in the soil, so even once the salt eventually washes out, the soil’s nutrient balance is degraded.

There is a third effect that matters long after the weeds are gone. Sodium breaks down soil structure by dispersing clay particles that would otherwise clump together. The result is soil that seals over, drains badly, crusts hard when dry and stays waterlogged when wet. Agricultural science calls this sodic soil, and it is genuinely difficult to reverse.

This is the crucial difference from a herbicide. Modern registered weedkillers are designed to break down into harmless components over days or weeks. Salt has no such pathway. Sodium chloride is an element pairing — it can only move, never degrade. The only exit from your soil is dissolving and washing somewhere else.

Salt is non-selective but not uniformly effective. What it kills easily and what it merely annoys comes down to root depth and salt tolerance.

The trap is the perennials. A dandelion in a driveway crack will look dead in three days and be back in three weeks, because the taproot sat below the salt. The natural response is to apply more, then more again. That escalation is how a small experiment becomes a patch of ground that will not grow anything for years.

The four problems nobody mentions

1. The soil stays dead

This is the one people regret most. Salt does not target weeds — it makes ground inhospitable to plants. Once you have salted a strip along a fence or a patch of gravel, that is what it is for a long time. If you later want a hedge, a border, a lawn edge or a raised bed there, you have a remediation job first.

2. It travels sideways and downwards

Salt dissolves in the first rain and moves with the water. Downhill, into beds, along the soil surface, and into the root zones of plants several feet away. Tree roots extend far beyond the canopy, so a salted driveway edge can reach a mature tree you never intended to touch. Symptoms show up as leaf scorch, dieback and thinning weeks or months later, by which point nobody connects it to the weeds.

3. It damages concrete, asphalt and metal

Salt water wicks into porous concrete. In freezing climates it drives the freeze-thaw cycling that causes scaling and spalling — the surface flaking that ruins a driveway. It also promotes corrosion of reinforcing steel and of any metal fixings, post bases, gate hardware or drain grates nearby. There is a real irony in salting a driveway crack and damaging the driveway.

4. It ends up in water you did not intend to salt

Chloride is highly soluble, does not bind to soil, does not degrade and is not removed by conventional water treatment. It moves into storm drains, streams and groundwater, where elevated chloride is toxic to freshwater invertebrates, amphibians and fish. Pets and wildlife. Salt residue on paving is a paw irritant, and dogs lick their paws. Ingesting a meaningful quantity of salt can cause vomiting, tremors and, in serious cases, sodium ion poisoning. How long does salted ground stay sterile?

There is no single answer, because the only thing that removes salt is water moving through the soil and carrying it away. Three variables decide it.

That last row is worth pausing on. People often salt weeds under a carport, along a sheltered wall or beneath a deck, precisely because those are awkward places to weed. Those are also the places where rain never reaches the ground, so the salt has no way out at all.

Where using pool salt is arguably defensible

There is a narrow case. If all of the following are true, a small, targeted application is a reasonable homeowner decision rather than a mistake.

It is a crack in a hard surface, not soil you might use later. A gap in a concrete driveway or between paving slabs, where nothing is ever meant to grow.

It is well away from planting beds, lawn edges and tree canopies. Several feet at minimum, and be honest about which way the ground slopes.

It does not drain to a storm drain, ditch, stream or pond. Follow the water before you follow the advice.

You are not on a private well, and neither is a close neighbour.

You accept the concrete risk. Especially in a freeze-thaw climate, where salt exposure accelerates surface scaling.

It is a one-off, not a routine. Repeated seasonal use in the same place is how accumulation happens.

Even here, boiling water usually does the same job on crack weeds with none of the persistence. It is worth trying first purely because it costs nothing and leaves nothing behind.

Where you should not use it at all

Lawns. Salt is completely non-selective. There is no dose that kills dandelions and spares grass. You will get dead patches that then need reseeding into damaged soil.

Flower beds and borders. Everything in the bed is at risk, including plants whose roots run under the treated area.

Vegetable gardens. Salted soil will not grow vegetables for a long time, and salt moves in irrigation water throughout the bed.

Around trees and shrubs. Root systems extend far past the canopy. Damage appears months later as scorch and dieback, and mature trees are expensive to replace.

Slopes above anything you value. Water carries salt downhill. A salted path at the top of a garden treats the whole garden below it.

Gravel drives you may ever plant beside. Gravel drains freely, which sounds good but simply means the salt reaches surrounding soil faster.

Anywhere near a well head, pond, stream or storm drain. Chloride is not removed by treatment and is toxic to aquatic life.

Rented property. Soil damage outlasts most tenancies and is a difficult conversation at the end of one.

A note on the legal side. Pool salt is not registered or labelled as a herbicide. Using a product as a pesticide when it is not registered for that purpose is not permitted in some jurisdictions, and rules vary considerably by country, state and municipality. Check locally before applying anything to ground you do not own outright, and never on shared or public land.

If you have decided to use it anyway

Assuming you have read the above and your situation genuinely fits the narrow case, these are the practices that limit the damage. The goal throughout is precision: the smallest amount, in the smallest area, staying where you put it.

Use a solution, not dry crystals

Dissolving salt in hot water lets you place it exactly where you want it. Dry crystals scattered on the surface get kicked, blown and washed across a much wider area than intended, and they take longer to act.

Keep the concentration modest

Roughly one part salt to three parts water is plenty for crack weeds. Stronger solutions do not kill deep taproots any more reliably; they just load more salt into the ground.

Apply directly to the plant, not broadcast

Use a watering can with a narrow spout, or a squeeze bottle. Never a sprayer — drift will reach plants you care about and coat metal and concrete you do not want salted.

Pick a dry spell

Rain within a day washes the salt off the target and out into the surrounding soil and drains. A few dry days let it act where it landed.

Add a drop of dish soap

It breaks surface tension so the solution clings to waxy leaves rather than running straight off. It makes a modest dose more effective, which means you use less.

Treat once and stop

If it did not work, the answer is a different method, not more salt. Repeat applications in the same place are what create long-term damage.

Keep pets and children off the area

For driveway and patio cracks specifically, the boring answer is the best one: boiling water now, then polymeric sand or proper jointing so seeds cannot germinate next year. It solves the problem permanently rather than annually, and it leaves nothing in the ground.

Horticultural vinegar is not kitchen vinegar. At 20–30 percent acetic acid it causes serious eye damage and skin burns. Eye protection and gloves are essential. “Natural” does not mean gentle.

Repairing soil you have already salted

If this page arrived too late and you have a patch that will not grow anything, recovery is possible but slow. The principle is simple: you cannot destroy salt, so you have to move it below the root zone.

Stop adding any more

Apply gypsum

Slow, deep, repeated watering over weeks. Slow matters more than volume — water that runs off the surface takes nothing with it. Heavy natural rainfall does the same job for free if you can wait.

Improve drainage if the water cannot get away

Leaching only works if there is somewhere for the salty water to go. Compacted or clay soil may need forking through, or a drainage route added.

Add organic matter

Compost and well-rotted manure rebuild the structure sodium destroyed, and help the soil hold water and nutrients again.

Test before replanting

A soil test that includes salinity, or a cheap electrical conductivity meter, tells you whether you are there. Guessing wastes a season and a tray of plants.

Consider a raised bed instead

Where drainage is poor and leaching is not realistic, importing clean soil into a raised bed is faster and more certain than remediating what is there.

Realistic timeline: a light contamination in free-draining soil with active leaching can be usable within a season. Heavy contamination in clay is a multi-year project. Salt-tolerant planting is a reasonable interim step while the ground recovers.

Mistakes people make with salt in the garden

Assuming it is gentler because it is “just salt”. Persistence is what makes something harsh, and salt is one of the most persistent things you can put in soil. A registered herbicide is designed to break down; salt is not.

Escalating when the first application fails. Perennials regrow from below the salted layer. Doubling the dose does not reach them, it just loads the soil.

Using it on a slope. Everything downhill gets treated too. This is the most common way people accidentally kill a lawn or a hedge.

Scattering dry crystals. They blow, scatter, get walked indoors and end up everywhere except the weed. A dissolved solution is more effective and far more controllable.

Using it in gravel next to a bed. Gravel drains quickly, which just means salt reaches the surrounding soil sooner.
