Cloudy water is the most frustrating problem in pool ownership because it looks like one problem and is actually nine. The water goes from sparkling to hazy over two or three days, the chlorine reading looks fine, and every forum tells you something different. Meanwhile you cannot see the drain and nobody wants to swim in it.
This guide separates the nine real causes, gives you a diagnostic order so you find yours in about ten minutes, and sets out the fix for each. Before you add anything to the water
The instinct with a cloudy pool is to throw chemicals at it. Resist that for twenty minutes. Roughly half of all cloudy pools are cloudy for a physical reason rather than a chemical one, and dosing the water blindly makes those cases worse, not better.
Get a full test, not a chlorine strip. You need free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid and salt. A single-parameter strip will send you down the wrong path.
Note your filter pressure. Compare it with the clean starting pressure you recorded at opening. If it is 8–10 psi above that, you have found at least part of your answer.
Look at the cell. Is the generator actually producing? Is the flow light on? When did you last inspect the plates?
Turn the pump to continuous. Whatever the cause turns out to be, the pool will not clear on a six-hour timer. Do this now so filtration is working while you diagnose.
Do not add clarifier yet. Clarifier is a finishing tool. Added before the cause is fixed it clogs the filter, raises pressure and buys you a few hours of marginal improvement followed by the same haze.
One useful sanity check: can you see the main drain? Slight haze where the drain is still visible is a different severity of problem from milky water where you cannot see your feet in the shallow end. The first is usually chemistry drifting. The second is usually filtration or algae.

Cause 1: free chlorine has quietly dropped
This is the single most common reason a salt pool goes cloudy, and it catches people out precisely because a salt system is supposed to handle chlorine for you. The generator produces at a fixed rate. Demand is not fixed. A hot week, a pool party, a thunderstorm dumping organic debris, or a rise in water temperature can all push demand above what the cell makes, and the residual falls without anyone touching a dial.
Below roughly 1 ppm free chlorine, bacteria and fine organic matter start accumulating faster than they are destroyed. The water does not turn green immediately — it goes dull first, then hazy, then milky.
How to confirm it
Free chlorine below 1 ppm, or combined chlorine (total minus free) above 0.5 ppm. Combined chlorine is the giveaway: it means chlorine has reacted with organics and formed chloramines, which sanitise poorly and often come with that sharp pool smell people wrongly call “too much chlorine”.
The fix
Add liquid chlorine after sunset so ultraviolet light does not destroy it before it works. The generator’s super chlorinate setting simply runs the cell at maximum and cannot deliver a shock dose in a useful timeframe. Dosing detail is in how to shock a salt water pool.
Chlorine is a considerably stronger sanitiser at lower pH. Shocking at pH 8.0 wastes a large share of what you add.
Circulation distributes the dose and brushing lifts anything clinging to surfaces into the water where chlorine can reach it.

Never mix chemicals. Add liquid chlorine and acid to the pool separately, hours apart, with the pump running. Combining them — even as residue in a bucket — can release chlorine gas.
Cause 2: pH has climbed and calcium is falling out of solution
This one is specific to salt pools, and it is badly under-diagnosed. Salt chlorine generators push pH upward continuously. The electrolysis reaction produces hydrogen gas at the cathode, and the turbulence that creates outgasses carbon dioxide from the water. Less dissolved carbon dioxide means higher pH. Left alone, a salt pool will climb from 7.4 to 8.0 in a week or two.
At high pH, dissolved calcium carbonate stops staying dissolved. It comes out of solution as microscopic crystals suspended throughout the water column. That is what the whitish, milky haze is. It is not dirt, it is not algae, and no amount of chlorine will touch it.
How to confirm it
pH at or above 7.8, calcium hardness on the high side, and a haze that looks white or grey rather than green or brown. Chlorine will usually test fine. A second tell: the haze appears gradually over days rather than overnight, and it is often worse after a hot spell when evaporation has concentrated everything.
The fix
Use muriatic acid or dry acid, added slowly with the pump running, spread around the deep end. Never pour acid into a skimmer.
Salt pools are happiest at roughly 70–80 ppm rather than 100–120. Less carbonate in the water means less to outgas and much slower upward pH drift.
Once the calcium redissolves or is caught by the filter, clarity returns. This usually takes 24 to 48 hours.

Cause 3: the salt cell is scaled and under-producing
A salt cell works by passing current between titanium plates. Anything insulating those plates reduces the current, and less current means less chlorine. The insulator is almost always calcium carbonate scale — the same white crust you find in a kettle — and it builds up steadily in exactly the high-pH conditions described above.
What makes this cause so easy to miss is that nothing on the control panel says “I am producing less chlorine”. The generator reports a percentage output that reflects what it is trying to do, not what it is achieving. Meanwhile the salt reading drops, because that reading is derived from conductivity across the same insulated plates.
How to confirm it
Take the cell out and look through it towards daylight. Clean plates are uniformly dark grey with clear gaps between them. Scale looks like white crusty bridging. If the panel has started reporting low salt over recent weeks with no water added or lost, that is a strong second signal.
The fix

Clean it, refit it, and retest salt afterwards; owners routinely find the reading jumps 300–500 ppm without a single bag going in.

Cause 4: the filter is not doing its job
Cloudiness is, by definition, particles small enough to stay suspended and numerous enough to scatter light. Removing them is the filter’s entire purpose. If the filter is loaded, damaged, undersized or being bypassed, no chemistry will produce clear water.
Sand filters
Sand channels and hardens over years, letting water take the path of least resistance straight through. Backwash when pressure rises 8–10 psi above clean, and replace the sand roughly every five to seven years. Sand is also the least fine of the three media, so it struggles most with the very small particles that cause haze.
Cartridge filters
Cartridges load up with oils and sunscreen that a hose will not remove. Soak them in a dedicated filter cleaner overnight once a season. A cartridge that looks clean but never drops back to its original pressure is finished — typically two to three years.
DE filters
The finest filtration of the three, and the fastest at clearing haze, but only if the grids are properly coated. Under-charging with DE powder after a backwash, or a torn grid, lets fine particles straight through.
The fix
Not a token thirty-second backwash. Run it until the sight glass is clear, then rinse. For cartridges, pull them and hose every pleat individually.

A multiport valve with a worn spider gasket sends water straight past the media. If pressure never rises no matter how dirty the pool gets, suspect this.

Cause 5: the pump is not running long enough
Every gallon in the pool has to pass through the filter, repeatedly, for the water to clear. One full turnover does not remove all suspended particles — it removes some fraction of them, and you need several turnovers before the water looks clean.
This matters more on a salt pool than on a tablet-chlorinated one, because the pump also drives the chlorine generator. When the pump is off, the cell makes nothing. Cutting run time to save electricity cuts sanitiser production by the same proportion.

If you have a variable-speed pump, run it at a low speed for longer rather than a high speed for less time. Low and slow filters more effectively, uses dramatically less electricity, and keeps the cell energised for more of the day. Check that the flow is still enough to close the salt cell’s flow switch.
Cause 6: calcium hardness is too high
Calcium hardness is how much dissolved calcium the water holds. It rises over time through evaporation, through hard fill water, and through any calcium-based chemical you add. Water that is saturated with calcium is chemically primed to dump it as scale the moment pH or temperature nudges upward — and a salt pool nudges pH upward continuously.
The result is a persistent faint haze that never fully clears, along with scale on the tile line, rough patches on plaster, and a salt cell that fouls again within weeks of every cleaning.
How to confirm it
Calcium hardness above roughly 400 ppm, with a haze that keeps returning after every other fix. If you also find white crust at the waterline and your cell scales up unusually fast, this is very likely your underlying problem.
The fix
There is no chemical that removes calcium from pool water. The only real fix is dilution: drain part of the pool and refill with softer water. Replace 20–30 percent, retest, and repeat if needed. A sequestrant will hold calcium in solution temporarily and is a reasonable stopgap, but it needs re-dosing and does not lower the number.

Cause 7: cyanuric acid has crept too high
Cyanuric acid is the stabiliser that shields chlorine from ultraviolet light. Without it a salt pool cannot hold a residual through a sunny afternoon. With too much of it, chlorine becomes sluggish: the same free chlorine reading kills organisms far more slowly, so algae and bacteria get a head start and the water loses clarity before your test ever looks alarming.

How to confirm it
Cyanuric acid above about 100 ppm on a proper test, combined with water that will not stay clear despite a healthy free chlorine reading and a clean filter. Rising chlorine demand year on year is another symptom.
The fix

Cause 8: algae is establishing itself
Cloudy water is often the stage before green water. Free-floating algae in its early phase does not look green — it looks like a dull haze, sometimes with a faint yellow or grey cast. By the time the pool is obviously green, the bloom has been running for days.
How to confirm it
The overnight chlorine test. Test free chlorine at dusk, then again at dawn before sunrise. If it has dropped by more than about 1 ppm with nobody in the pool, something in the water is consuming it. That something is almost always algae.
Slippery walls. Run a hand along the wall in a shaded corner or behind the ladder. Algae feels slick before it looks like anything.
It is worse in dead spots. Steps, corners, behind lights, under the skimmer — anywhere circulation is poor.
The fix
Chlorine works considerably harder at lower pH. Do this before dosing, not after.
One dose rarely finishes the job. You are aiming to hold an elevated free chlorine level until the overnight loss test comes back clean, retesting and topping up each evening.
Algae attached to plaster is partly shielded from chlorine. Brushing exposes it. This is the step that turns a week-long fight into a three-day one.
Everything you kill ends up in the filter. Check pressure daily and clean whenever it climbs.

Cause 9: dead algae and fine debris still in suspension
This is the good kind of cloudy, and the one people panic about unnecessarily. You shocked a green pool, the green disappeared, and now the water is grey or milky white. That is the corpse of the algae bloom, suspended in the water, waiting to be filtered out. The chemistry has already worked.
It looks alarming because the pool arguably looks worse than it did when it was green. It is not. Green means living algae consuming your chlorine; grey means dead matter awaiting removal.
The fix
This is a filtration problem now, not a chemistry problem. Every hour of run time is progress.
Sometimes twice a day for the first two days. This is normal and it is the rate-limiting step.
Do not let it fall away early or the surviving algae restarts.
Much of it drops to the floor overnight. Vacuuming to waste removes it without pushing it through the filter, though it does lower the water level.

Clarifier or flocculant? They are not the same thing
Both are coagulants and both make particles bigger, but they are used in opposite ways and choosing wrongly wastes a weekend.

Neither is a cure. If your pool is cloudy because chlorine is low, pH is high, the cell is scaled or the filter is failing, a clarifier buys you a day of slightly better water and then the haze comes back. Fix the cause first, then use these to finish the job faster.
More clarifier is not better. Overdosing is a common self-inflicted cause of cloudy water — the excess polymer itself clouds the water and blinds the filter. Follow the label dose exactly and give it 24 hours before judging.
How long clearing should actually take
Knowing the expected timeline stops you changing tack too early, which is the most common way people turn a two-day problem into a two-week one.
The 48-hour rule. If you have corrected what you believe is the cause, run the pump continuously for 48 hours, and see no improvement at all, your diagnosis is wrong. Go back to the table at the top and work down it again rather than adding more of the same chemical.
Stopping it happening again
Test free chlorine twice a week, not once a month. A salt pool feels automatic and is not. Catching a drop at 1.5 ppm is a ten-minute fix; catching it at 0.2 ppm is a weekend.

Inspect the cell every few months. A quick look through it takes two minutes and catches scale long before it costs you clarity. Clean it whenever you see white bridging.
Record your clean filter pressure. Without a baseline you cannot tell a loaded filter from a normal one. Write it on the filter housing with a marker.
Raise run time before a hot week or a party, not after. Demand rises with temperature and bather load, and the generator cannot anticipate either.
Brush the pool weekly. Especially steps, corners and behind the ladder. It is the cheapest algae prevention there is.

Why is my salt water pool cloudy but the chlorine is fine?
Because roughly half of cloudy pools are cloudy for physical reasons. The usual suspects when chlorine tests fine are high pH precipitating calcium, a loaded or bypassing filter, too little pump run time, or dead algae still suspended after a shock. Should I shock a cloudy salt water pool?

Is cloudy pool water dangerous to swim in?
It depends on the cause. Cloudiness from calcium or dead algae with a good chlorine residual is unpleasant rather than unsafe. Cloudiness from low or zero free chlorine means the water is not being sanitised, and that is a genuine health risk. How long should I run the pump to clear cloudy water?
Continuously, day and night, until the water is clear. Cloudiness is suspended particles and the only thing that removes them is repeated passes through the filter. Short timer cycles are the most common reason a pool stays hazy for weeks.
Can high salt cause cloudy water?
Not directly. Salt itself does not cloud water at pool concentrations.
