A salt water pool is a chlorine pool. That is the whole thing.

Almost every misunderstanding in this collection comes from one sentence people were told at the point of sale: salt water pools are chlorine-free. They are not. The salt is not the sanitizer. The salt is the raw material a machine uses to manufacture chlorine, continuously, in your pump room.

Michigan’s environment department puts it flatly: salt does not kill bacteria, inactivate viruses or break down organic material, and the free chlorine generated from the salt is what disinfects the water. The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance describes the same process in chemical terms, noting that the chlorine an electrolytic generator produces yields hypochlorous acid in the pool exactly as traditional chlorine does. Your water ends up chemically indistinguishable from a well-run tablet pool. What changes is the delivery method, not the chemistry.

The reaction itself is the oldest trick in industrial chemistry. The EPA writes it as 2NaCl + 2H₂O producing Cl₂, H₂ and 2NaOH: chlorine gas at the positive plate, hydrogen and sodium hydroxide at the negative one. Three of those four products matter to you, and the table below is the short version of why.

Two consequences follow from that table and they explain most of the guides below. Your pH will climb on its own, every week, forever, which is a maintenance rhythm rather than a problem to solve once. And the cell is a consumable part with a service life, not permanent plumbing, so the honest cost of a salt pool includes replacing it.

Water and health

What chlorine actually kills, and how long it takes

Whether the chlorine came from a bag or from a cell, it does the same work at the same speed. The figures below are the CDC’s, measured at 1 ppm free chlorine, pH 7.5 or lower, water at 77°F or warmer. They are worth knowing because they explain why a pool can look immaculate and still make someone ill.

The Cryptosporidium figure is not a typo: the CDC’s remediation protocol calls for a concentration-and-time value of 15,300, which works out at 12.75 hours at 20 ppm or 25.5 hours at 10 ppm, with the pool closed throughout.

That last row is not theoretical. In the CDC’s review of outbreaks linked to treated recreational water between 2015 and 2019, 76 of the 155 outbreaks with a confirmed cause were Cryptosporidium, and those accounted for 84 percent of all reported cases. Of the outbreaks occurring in June through August, 92 percent were associated with pools.

They are exactly as sanitary as the free chlorine level in them, no more and no less, and a generator that has quietly stopped producing gives you a pool with no sanitizer at all while the water still looks perfect.

The cyanuric acid row is the one that catches salt pool owners. Stabilizer protects chlorine from sunlight, which a generator badly needs, so people add it and never remove it. It leaves only by draining and refilling, and the CDC’s answer to a high stabilizer level is to raise the minimum free chlorine you hold rather than to ignore the ratio.

Perspective

How salty a salt pool actually is

People imagine the Atlantic. A residential salt pool runs at roughly a tenth of that. Hayward’s Aqua Rite manual gives an ideal range of 2,700 to 3,400 ppm with 3,200 as optimal, and the PHTA quotes a broader 3,000 to 5,000 across brands. Seawater, by the PHTA’s own comparison, sits between 31,000 and 38,000 ppm, and the USGS puts the ocean at about 35,000.

The taste threshold explains why so many first-time swimmers say they cannot detect anything. Hayward states that salt begins to be tasted at around 3,500 to 4,000 ppm, which is just above a correctly set pool. Get the level wrong on the high side and the first symptom is not corrosion or a fault code. It is a swimmer mentioning the water tastes like something.

Equipment figures come from manufacturer documentation, because service life and cleaning intervals are model-specific and a generic number would be wrong for most readers.

What the guides do not do is replace your local pool code or your equipment manual. Public and semi-public pools are regulated at state and county level, chemical limits differ between jurisdictions, and every cell manufacturer specifies its own acid ratio for cleaning. Where those disagree with anything here, they win.

You are deciding whether to go salt

The honest version of the sales pitch, including the parts that do not appear in it. Start with the chlorine question, because everything else follows from it.

The maintenance guide is the one worth reading twice. A salt pool moves the work rather than removing it: less weekly dosing, more acid, more attention to a cell you did not previously own.

You are converting, in one direction or the other

Both conversions come up, and the second one more often than the industry likes to admit. A dead cell on an older system is frequently the moment people reconsider.

The above-ground guide carries the caveat that matters most to anyone with a metal-walled pool, and it is worth checking before you buy a generator rather than after.

Buying salt, and getting the right amount in

Quantity, product and method are three different questions with three different answers, which is why they are three guides. Pool salt is not interchangeable with everything else sold in a bag.

Salt does not evaporate, so it only leaves through splash-out, backwashing, leaks and rain overflow. Owners who top up on a schedule rather than on a test result are usually the ones who end up reading the guide on lowering it.

Testing the water and correcting it

Four of the five most common salt pool complaints are here. The fifth is the cell, which has its own group below.

Start with the testing guide before you correct anything. A control panel reports what the cell infers from conductivity, which drifts with temperature and with a scaled cell, so the panel and a strip disagreeing is normal rather than a fault.

The cell, which is the expensive part

Everything else in a salt system is ordinary pool plumbing. The cell is the component with a service life, a cleaning schedule and a replacement invoice.

Over-cleaning shortens a cell’s life as reliably as never cleaning it. Acid strips the coating off the plates, so the rule is to clean when output has genuinely dropped and scale is visible, not on a calendar.

Adding chlorine by hand to a salt pool

Yes, you can, and there are two situations where you have to. There is also one product you should never use for it.

The tablet warning is the practical one. Stabilized tablets keep adding cyanuric acid that never leaves, and a salt pool already needs some. Push it past the ratio the Model Aquatic Health Code flags and your chlorine reading stops meaning what you think it means.

Opening, closing and the routine in between

The seasonal jobs, plus the ongoing rhythm. Order matters more than people expect at both ends of the season.

Cold water is the detail that catches people at both ends. Most generators cut output below roughly 60°F to protect the plates, which means an early spring opening leaves you dosing chlorine manually for a few weeks whether you expected to or not.

Pool salt outside the pool, and one holiday question

The searches that have nothing to do with running a pool, and are asked by people standing in a shed during a storm or booking a trip.

The weed answer is yes and the reason to hesitate is the soil. Sodium chloride does not break down, it moves with water, and the patch it sterilizes tends to be larger and longer-lasting than the crack you aimed at.

Do salt water pools have chlorine in them?

Yes, always. A salt chlorine generator uses electrolysis to convert dissolved salt into chlorine, which dissolves into the water as hypochlorous acid, the same sanitizer a tablet pool uses. Michigan’s environment department states plainly that salt itself does not kill bacteria or inactivate viruses.

Why does the pH keep rising in a salt pool?

Because the reaction that makes chlorine also makes sodium hydroxide, a strong base. The EPA writes the chlor-alkali reaction as 2NaCl plus 2H2O yielding chlorine, hydrogen and 2NaOH. The upward pH drift is built into the process, which is why salt pool owners add acid rather than base.

How salty does a salt water pool taste?

What free chlorine level should a pool hold?

Can chlorine kill everything in a pool?

No. At 1 ppm free chlorine the CDC puts E. coli at under a minute and hepatitis A at about 16 minutes, but Cryptosporidium at about 15,300 minutes, or 10.6 days. That parasite caused 76 of 155 confirmed treated-water outbreaks between 2015 and 2019.
