The temptation to treat them as interchangeable is obvious and, in one direction, often justified. In the other direction it occasionally ends with rust-coloured staining across a plaster finish that costs several hundred dollars to remove. The whole answer lives on the bag, in about four words of small print, and once you know which four words to look for the decision takes ten seconds.
The headline: pool salt in a softener is almost always fine. Softener salt in a pool is fine only if it is plain sodium chloride crystals at high purity with no additives, which some softener salt is and a great deal of it is not.

Read that “what impurities do” row carefully, because it explains the whole asymmetry. A brine tank is a flow-through system: whatever does not dissolve settles, and gets cleaned out or flushed away eventually. A swimming pool is a closed system holding twenty thousand gallons, and anything you add stays there until you replace the water. That is why the tolerance for impurity is so much lower in one direction than the other.

Solar salt crystals are the one that works, and they are also usually the cheapest softener option, which is a happy coincidence. The bag is typically labelled something like “solar salt crystals, 99.6% pure sodium chloride, no additives”, and that product is chemically very close to what you would buy in a pool aisle for more money.

Using softener salt in a pool
This is the direction people ask about most, because it is the one where money is on the table. Here is when it works.
It says sodium chloride, not potassium chloride. Both are sold as softener salt and both sit in the same aisle. Only sodium chloride works in a chlorine generator.
Purity is stated, at 99 percent or higher. A bag that does not state a purity figure is a bag that does not want to. Check your generator manual too, since several specify 99.8 percent.
It says no additives. Explicitly. Not “pure”, not “premium”, but a clear statement that nothing has been added.
It is loose crystals, not pellets or blocks. Grain shape decides whether it will dissolve in hours or days.
The bag is clean and dry. Salt stored on a damp concrete floor near rusting metal can pick up iron, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid.
Not if it mentions rust, iron, or hardness in the product name. Those are additive products by definition.
Not if your generator manual specifies a purity you cannot verify. The warranty risk outweighs the saving.

The additives, and what they actually do in a pool
Softener salt additives exist for perfectly good reasons that have nothing to do with pools, which is precisely the problem.

Metal staining is the failure mode worth fearing. Chlorine burns off, pH can be adjusted, algae can be killed. Iron and manganese staining on a pool finish requires a sequestrant plus an acid treatment, sometimes an acid wash, and in bad cases it does not fully come out. Saving three dollars a bag is a poor trade against that outcome.
Potassium chloride: the outright deal-breaker
This one deserves its own section because the mistake is so easy to make. Potassium chloride softener salt is sold as a low-sodium alternative for people watching dietary sodium, and it sits directly beside sodium chloride in the same aisle, in similar bags, at similar prices.
A salt chlorine generator splits sodium chloride specifically. Potassium chloride is a different compound, and while it does conduct in water, it will not give you the chlorine production you need. Worse, you cannot remove it. Once it is dissolved in twenty thousand gallons the only way out is replacing water, exactly as with any other salinity overshoot.

Check the chemical formula on the bag, not the marketing on the front
The check takes two seconds. Turn the bag over and find the composition. If it says potassium chloride, or KCl, or markets itself as a sodium-free or low-sodium option, it is not the product you want.
The dissolving problem with pellets
Even when the chemistry is perfect, the physical form can make a product unsuitable, and softener pellets are the clearest example.
Pellets are compressed deliberately so they dissolve slowly and steadily in a brine tank, maintaining a consistent brine concentration over days. That is exactly the wrong property in a pool, where you want several hundred pounds gone within a few hours so you can take a meaningful reading.
Three consequences follow from slow dissolving. Undissolved salt sitting against plaster can etch the finish. Your salt reading stays low for far longer than the usual 24 hours, which tempts a second dose and an overshoot. And brushing a pool floor covered in stubborn pellets is a genuinely tedious job that pool-grade salt simply does not require.
The other direction: pool salt in a water softener
Much simpler, and the answer is usually yes.
A brine tank wants pure sodium chloride, and pool salt is pure sodium chloride refined to a standard that comfortably exceeds what a softener needs. There is no additive to worry about, no compound mismatch, and the higher purity actually means less insoluble sediment accumulating in the bottom of the tank over the years, which reduces how often you need to clean it out.
Why it works
Same compound, higher purity, no additives to interfere with the resin. Softeners are designed around sodium chloride and pool salt is the cleanest sodium chloride commonly available. Less sediment means a cleaner tank.
The two caveats
It costs more per pound, so it makes more sense as a stopgap than a permanent switch. And the finer grain can occasionally bridge or pack in some brine tanks, so check the tank a few days later and break up any crust that has formed.
One thing worth noting: if your softener currently runs on potassium chloride because someone in the household is managing dietary sodium, switching to pool salt changes that. What your generator warranty says about this
Worth checking before you make a habit of it, because manufacturers are specific about salt.
Many salt chlorine generator warranties state a minimum purity, commonly 99.8 percent sodium chloride with no additives, and using a product below that specification is a recognised ground for declining a claim on a cell that has stained, fouled or failed early. That is not usually enforced petty, but if a cell arrives back at a manufacturer visibly contaminated with iron deposits, the conversation goes differently.
Read the salt section of your generator manual. It will name a purity figure and often a grade.
Keep the bag or a photo of the label. If your softener salt genuinely meets 99.6 or 99.8 percent and says so, that is your evidence.
Do not mix products mid-season. If you need to demonstrate what went into the pool, one consistent product is a much easier story.

Assuming all softener salt is the same. The category spans 95 percent rock salt with additives to 99.9 percent evaporated pellets. Only one narrow slice suits a pool.
Buying rust-remover salt because it sounds beneficial. It removes rust from a resin bed. In a pool it adds chemistry you did not ask for.
Using pellets and then adding more when the reading stays low. The pellets are still on the floor. This is a classic route to a salinity overshoot.
Comparing prices per bag instead of per pound. Bag weights differ; the saving often shrinks or vanishes.
