Opening a salt water pool is 90 percent the same as opening any other pool. The 10 percent that is different is where almost everybody goes wrong: they switch the salt chlorine generator on far too early, watch it produce almost nothing in cold water, panic about the low salt warning on the panel, and dump in bags of salt the pool never needed.

What actually changes when the pool is salt
A salt water pool is a chlorine pool. The chlorine is made on site by passing a low-voltage current through salty water inside the cell, instead of arriving in a bucket of tablets. Everything about covers, plumbing, filters, brushing and balancing is identical to a traditional pool. Four things are different at opening, and all four are about the generator.
The cell has been in storage
Most people remove the cell for winter and fit a dummy pipe in its place. That means reinstalling it, checking O-rings, and confirming the flow direction before you start the pump.
Cold water throttles output
Salt cells produce far less chlorine in cold water, and most modern units cut output or shut down entirely below roughly 60°F. Turning it on in April achieves nothing except confusing you.
The salt reading is unreliable at opening
The panel measures conductivity, and conductivity drops as water gets colder. A pool at exactly the right salt level can read several hundred ppm low on a cold morning.
The generator cannot shock a pool
A cell trickles chlorine in over hours. Opening a pool that has been sealed for five months needs a fast, large dose of chlorine. That is a job for liquid chlorine, not for the super chlorinate button.

When to open: earlier than you think, but not for the reason you think
The instinct is to wait for warm weather. Almost every pool professional will tell you the opposite: open earlier. The trigger is water temperature, and specifically the temperature at which algae starts to move.
Opening early costs you a few weeks of running the pump. Opening late costs you shock, algaecide, a filter cleaning and possibly a week of your life. In most of the country the sweet spot is somewhere between mid-March and late April, moving later the further north you are.
Opening early does not mean running the salt cell early. You can open the pool, circulate, balance and sanitise with liquid chlorine for several weeks before the water is warm enough for the generator to be worth switching on. That is the correct approach, not a compromise.
What to have on hand before you start
Equipment
Cover pump or submersible pump, leaf net, stiff pool brush, telescopic pole, vacuum head and hose, garden hose, bucket, union wrench or channel-lock pliers, spare union O-rings for the cell, and a filter cleaning kit if you run cartridges.
Test gear
A proper drop test kit or a good photometer, salt test strips or a digital salt meter, and a thermometer. Do not rely on the generator panel alone — see how to test salt level in a pool.
Chemicals
Liquid chlorine (several jugs), muriatic acid or dry acid, sodium bicarbonate for alkalinity, calcium chloride if hardness is low, cyanuric acid stabiliser, and pool salt. Buy salt last, after you have tested.
Optional but useful
A cell cleaning stand and a jug of dilute acid if the plates need cleaning, plus a metal sequestrant if you are on well water or the pool has stain history.

The full opening sequence, step by step
Work through these in order. The order matters more than the individual steps — particularly the fact that the salt cell comes on near the end, not the beginning.
Pump standing water off a solid cover and sweep or blow off leaves and grit before you touch it. Pulling a loaded cover into the pool turns a two-hour opening into a two-day one. With a mesh safety cover, brush off debris, then unhook it working around the pool rather than dragging it. Lay it out on the lawn, hose it, let it dry completely, and store it dry — a damp cover folded into a bag is a mildew problem next October.
Pull winter plugs from returns and the main drain line, remove skimmer Gizzmos or bottles, refit eyeball fittings, skimmer baskets and the pump basket, screw the drain plugs back into the pump and filter, and reinstall the pressure gauge and any sight glass. Keep the plugs together in a labelled bag so autumn is easier.
Take the cell out of storage and look through it at the light. If the plates are clean, rinse and refit. If there is white scale between them, clean it now rather than after you have started the season. Fit fresh union O-rings, lubricate them with silicone-based lubricant, and pay attention to the flow arrow — many cells are directional. Reconnect the flow switch and the cell cable, and check the cable for rodent damage, which is more common over winter than people expect.
Fill to roughly the middle of the skimmer mouth. Too low and the pump sucks air; too high and the skimmer cannot skim. Note roughly how many inches you added, because that is fresh water diluting your salt, and it is a large part of why the reading is low.
Open every valve, fill the pump pot, close the lid, and start the pump. Purge air from the filter using the air relief valve until water comes out. Note the clean starting pressure on the gauge. Then leave circulation running continuously — 24 hours a day for the first few days, not on a timer.
Brush walls, floor, steps and behind ladders. Net the large debris out before you vacuum, and vacuum to waste if the bottom is heavy with silt. Clean or backwash the filter once pressure climbs 8–10 psi above the clean baseline.
This is the step people skip. Get a full test: free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid and salt. Write it down. The generator stays off until this is corrected, because running a cell in unbalanced water is how plates get scaled in week one.

Now that the water is circulating and balanced, test salt again and add what is missing. Broadcast it across the deep end with the pump running, brush it around so it does not sit in a pile, and give it 24 hours to dissolve fully before you retest. Bring free chlorine up manually, after sunset so the sun does not burn it off before it works. How much depends on how dirty the water is and on your stabiliser level. When salt is at target, the water is balanced, the pool is clear, and the water is above roughly 60°F, turn the cell on. Start at about 50 percent output with your normal run time, then adjust. Starting at 100 percent drives pH up hard and wastes cell life.
Test free chlorine every two or three days. If it drifts down, increase output or run time. If it climbs above range, cut back. Every pool settles at a different number depending on sun exposure, bather load, stabiliser and pump hours.

Adjusting pool chemistry out of order is the single most common reason an opening drags on. Each parameter influences the next, so correcting them in the wrong sequence means correcting some of them twice.

Why alkalinity comes first
Total alkalinity is the buffer that resists pH movement. If you correct pH while alkalinity is wrong, pH drifts straight back within a day or two and you repeat the job. Fix the buffer, then fix the number the buffer controls.
Why salt pools want alkalinity at the lower end
Salt cells drive pH upward continuously. The electrolysis process releases hydrogen gas at the cathode and the resulting turbulence outgasses carbon dioxide, which raises pH. Sitting at 70–80 ppm alkalinity rather than 100–120 gives you less carbonate to outgas and noticeably slower upward pH drift over a season. Do not skip cyanuric acid
Stabiliser protects chlorine from ultraviolet light. Without it, a salt cell can be running flat out and still show near-zero free chlorine by mid-afternoon, because the sun destroys it as fast as the cell makes it. Salt pools generally want a higher CYA than tablet-chlorinated pools — commonly 60 to 80 ppm — because the cell delivers chlorine slowly and continuously and needs the protection. Add stabiliser through the skimmer with the pump running, and be patient: it can take several days to register on a test.
Never mix chemicals in a bucket. Add each product to the pool separately, with circulation running, and leave time between them. Combining acid with chlorine products — even residue in the bottom of a bucket — can release chlorine gas. Always add acid to water, never water to acid.
Reinstalling the salt cell without creating a leak
The cell is the one piece of equipment that comes out and goes back every year, which makes it the most likely source of a drip at startup. Five minutes of care here saves a soggy equipment pad.
Inspect the plates before fitting. Hold the cell up to daylight and look down the length of it. Clean plates look uniformly dark grey. White crusty deposits between plates mean scale, and scale means the cell will under-read salt and under-produce chlorine all season. Replace the union O-rings. They cost very little and they harden over a winter in a cold shed. Lubricate with a silicone-based pool lubricant, never petroleum jelly, which degrades rubber.
Respect the flow arrow. Many cells are directional and some have the flow switch integrated in a specific orientation. Fitting it backwards can leave the flow switch unable to close, which shows up later as a persistent no-flow error.
Hand-tighten the unions, then a nudge. Over-tightening cracks the union collar. Snug by hand, start the pump, and only nip it further if you see a weep.
Check the cell cable and the control board. Look for chew marks, cracked insulation and corroded pins. Rodents nest in equipment pads over winter and a damaged cell cord is a common opening surprise.
Do not run the cell dry. Never energise the generator without water flowing through it. If you have the cell out for cleaning and the pump running through the dummy pipe, leave the generator switched off at the panel.

Why the panel screams low salt in April (and why you should not believe it yet)
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in salt pool ownership. Every spring, thousands of owners open their pool, switch on the generator, see a low salt warning, and buy six bags they do not need. Then they spend July draining water to get the level back down.
Here is what is actually happening.
Cold water conducts less
Your generator does not measure salt. It measures the electrical conductivity of the water and converts that to an estimated ppm using a temperature compensation curve. Cold water is less conductive, and the compensation is calibrated for typical summer conditions. In 55°F water, a pool sitting at a perfect 3,200 ppm can display several hundred ppm lower.
Scale on the plates skews the reading
A film of calcium carbonate acts as an insulator between the plates and the water. Less current flows, the unit interprets that as less salt, and it reports low. Cleaning the cell alone often “adds” 300 to 500 ppm to the displayed reading without a single bag going in.
You genuinely lost some
Some of it is real. Water pumped off the cover, a lowered winter level, overflow from heavy rain and the fresh water you just added all dilute salt. Just usually far less than the panel implies — often one or two bags, not six.

If the cover came off and the water is green
It happens, usually after a mild winter or a cover that let light through. The important thing to understand is that a salt generator will not fix this. A cell adds chlorine at a slow, steady rate designed to maintain clear water, not to burn through an algae bloom. Trying to clear green water with the generator is like trying to fill a bath with an eyedropper.
Nothing else works without flow. Net out the worst of the debris, start the pump, and be prepared to clean the filter repeatedly over the next few days.
Chlorine is significantly more effective as a sanitiser at lower pH. Shocking at pH 8.0 wastes a large share of what you add.
One dose is rarely enough. You are aiming to hold an elevated free chlorine level until the green is gone and it stops falling overnight, testing and topping up each evening. The dosing method is in how to shock a salt water pool.
Algae clinging to plaster is shielded from chlorine. Brushing exposes it. This is the step that separates a three-day recovery from a two-week one.
Dead algae goes somewhere, and that somewhere is your filter. Backwash or clean cartridges whenever pressure rises 8–10 psi above clean.

Seven opening mistakes that cost salt pool owners the most
Turning the generator on before the water is balanced. Running a cell in high-pH, high-hardness water is the fastest way to scale the plates. You will spend the season with a cell that under-produces and a panel that under-reads.
Buying salt based on the panel reading. Cold water plus a scaled cell can under-report by hundreds of ppm. Clean, warm, test, then buy.
Relying on super chlorinate to clear the pool. That setting simply runs the cell at maximum. It cannot deliver a shock dose in any useful timeframe, and running the cell flat out for days shortens its life.
Skipping stabiliser. Without cyanuric acid the sun destroys chlorine faster than the cell makes it, and you will chase free chlorine all summer while blaming the generator.
Adding salt before the water is clear. You need to see the floor to brush undissolved salt around. Salt sitting in a pile on a vinyl liner for hours can bleach the pattern permanently.
Reusing hardened union O-rings. A two-dollar part turns into a slow leak that corrodes the pad and drips onto electrics.
Running the pump on a short timer from day one. The first week needs long or continuous run hours to filter out a winter of debris and distribute chemicals. Cut back to a normal schedule once the water is clear.
