Why liquid chlorine is the right answer

Chlorine, immediately available. Plus a small quantity of sodium chloride as a by-product, which in a salt pool is not a contaminant but the raw material your cell runs on. Nothing else accumulates.

What it costs

Typically 4 to 8 dollars a gallon at pool supply strength of 10 to 12.5 percent. A jug on the shelf covers most emergencies for a mid-sized pool, and it is by far the cheapest way to shock.

The one drawback

It degrades in storage, losing strength over weeks especially in heat and light. Buy it fresh when you need it rather than keeping a year-old jug, and store it cool, dark and sealed.

What about household bleach?

Chemically the same thing at lower strength, usually 6 to 8.25 percent, so you need roughly twice the volume. Use only plain unscented bleach with no additives, thickeners or cleaning agents.

The cal-hypo problem: calcium on your plates

Calcium hypochlorite is the default granular shock in most stores, it is cheap, and there is nothing wrong with it in a plaster pool with soft fill water. In a salt pool it works against you in a specific way.

Every ppm of free chlorine delivered by cal-hypo also delivers roughly 0.7 ppm of calcium hardness. Calcium hardness is the single biggest driver of scale forming on your salt cell plates, and scale is what makes a cell under-report salinity, lose output and eventually need an acid clean that costs it some of its coating.

Used once in an emergency, that is negligible. Used routinely for several seasons, it walks your calcium hardness steadily upward, and the only way back down is a partial drain and refill. The tablet problem: stabiliser that never leaves

This is the big one, and it is the reason for the headline on this page.

Trichlor tablets are stabilised chlorine, which means each tablet carries cyanuric acid with it. Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from sunlight, which is useful, and it does not evaporate, break down or get consumed. It leaves a pool only when water leaves.

A salt pool already targets a relatively high stabiliser level, typically 60 to 80 ppm, because the chlorine a cell produces is unprotected and would otherwise burn off through the afternoon. Start adding tablets on top of that and the number climbs with no ceiling.

What happens at high stabiliser is that an increasing share of your free chlorine is bound up and unavailable, so the pool needs a higher and higher measured level to achieve the same sanitising. The generator runs harder to keep up, which scales the cell faster, which reduces output further. It is a slow spiral, and the only exit is replacing a large volume of water.

Trichlor also drives pH down hard, which sounds helpful in a salt pool that drifts up, and briefly is. The problem is that it does so while adding stabiliser, so you are trading a manageable weekly task for an irreversible accumulation. Use acid for pH and liquid chlorine for chlorine, and keep the two jobs separate.

Chlorine floaters and feeders

A floating dispenser full of tablets is the most common way people accidentally get into the stabiliser spiral, precisely because it is so convenient. It sits there quietly doing its thing while the CYA number climbs.

There is a second, more immediate problem. A floater that drifts into a corner or parks itself against a step releases concentrated dissolving chlorine onto one spot for hours. You want to bring free chlorine back into the normal 2 to 4 ppm range, usually after heavy use or a cloudy week.

Here the target depends on your cyanuric acid reading rather than on pool size alone, because stabiliser determines how much of your measured chlorine is actually active. How to add chlorine to a salt pool safely

Test first

Free chlorine, combined chlorine and pH at minimum. A basic kit that maxes out at 5 ppm is fine for top-ups but not for shocking, where you need a test that reads well past 10.

Make sure the pump is running

Chlorine that is not circulating sits in one place, bleaching whatever is underneath it and doing nothing for the rest of the pool.

Add at dusk where possible

Unstabilised chlorine has a short half-life in strong sunlight. A dose added at noon can lose a third of itself before it has finished circulating.

Pour slowly around the deep end perimeter

Walk the edge and pour in a steady stream a little away from the wall so it does not run down the liner or plaster. Gloves and eye protection, standing upwind.

Never pour it into the skimmer

A concentrated slug through the pump, heater and cell is bad for all three, and if there is any acid residue in the line it is genuinely dangerous.

Do not mix products

One chemical at a time, with circulation between them. Never combine chlorine types, and never add acid and chlorine together, since that combination can release chlorine gas.

Brush if you are treating algae

Algae in the surface texture is shielded from the water. Brushing exposes it, and it is half the treatment.

Retest after circulation

An hour for a small top-up, the following morning for a shock. Then adjust rather than assuming the dose landed where you intended.

Never mix pool chemicals, and never add acid and chlorine at the same time. Combining different chlorine products, or chlorine with acid, can produce chlorine gas. Always add chemicals separately, directly to the pool water rather than into a container that held something else, and allow circulation time between them.
