The question usually comes from one of two places. Either someone has heard salt pools are “chemical free” and wants to know whether that means less sanitary, or they have been invited to swim in one and are quietly wondering whether the water is actually clean.

The answer is straightforward once you know what a salt pool actually is: it is a chlorine pool that makes its own chlorine. So the honest question is not “is salt sanitary” but “is this particular pool holding enough chlorine at the right pH” — and that is something you can check in about thirty seconds. The short answer

Yes, a well-maintained salt water pool is sanitary. It is disinfected by chlorine, to the same standard as any other chlorinated pool, because chlorine is exactly what the salt cell produces.

What is actually doing the sanitising

The single most common misconception about salt pools is that the salt sanitises the water. It does not. Salt at pool concentrations — around 3,000 parts per million, roughly a tenth as salty as seawater — has no meaningful antimicrobial effect. Bacteria are perfectly happy in it.

What happens is this. The salt cell passes a low-voltage current through the salty water flowing past its plates. That splits sodium chloride and water, and one of the products is hypochlorous acid — the same active sanitiser you get from a chlorine tablet, from liquid chlorine, or from a bucket of granular shock.

The chlorine does its work, reverts to chloride, and cycles round again. What chlorine kills, and how quickly

At a proper free chlorine level and correct pH, chlorine is a fast and effective disinfectant against the great majority of things people worry about in pool water.

Figures are approximate and assume around 1 ppm free chlorine at pH 7.5. They come from published public health guidance and are there to show the relative scale, not to be used as a precise contact-time calculation. Higher chlorine and lower pH both shorten these times considerably.

Two things change these numbers dramatically

pH

Chlorine exists in water as two forms, and only one of them is a strong disinfectant. At pH 7.2 a large share of it is in the active form; by pH 8.0 most of it is not. The same test reading does substantially less work at high pH. Cyanuric acid

Stabiliser protects chlorine from sunlight, which a salt pool genuinely needs. But it also slows chlorine down. The higher your stabiliser, the more free chlorine you need to achieve the same disinfection speed. The one real exception: cryptosporidium

If there is a genuine weakness in chlorinated pools — salt or otherwise — this is it, and it is worth understanding properly rather than being alarmed by.

Cryptosporidium is a parasite that forms a tough protective shell. That shell makes it extraordinarily resistant to chlorine: it can survive for days in water chlorinated at normal levels, where E. coli dies in under a minute. It is the leading cause of pool-linked diarrhoeal outbreaks, and it spreads through faecal contamination — typically one person with a diarrhoeal illness swimming when they should not be.

This is not a salt pool problem. It affects every chlorinated pool equally, public and private, because the resistance is to chlorine itself. Nothing about how the chlorine was generated changes it.

What actually protects against it

The advantage: a cell adds chlorine continuously rather than in weekly peaks, so the residual sits in a narrower band. Fewer troughs means fewer windows where sanitation is marginal. It is a real benefit, though a modest one.

Public health bodies group these under recreational water illnesses. Almost all of them trace back to one of three things: chlorine that was too low, pH that was too high, or a swimmer who should not have been in the water.

How to judge a pool you have been invited to swim in

You will not have a test kit at a barbecue. These are the signals available to anyone standing at the edge, roughly in order of usefulness.

Can you see the bottom clearly? Sharp, crisp detail on the main drain is the single best visual indicator. Clear water suggests working filtration and usually working chemistry. It is also a safety requirement in its own right.

Is there a strong chlorine smell? Counter-intuitively, a strong smell is a bad sign — it means chloramines, which means too little free chlorine. A well-run pool smells of very little.

Are the walls and steps slippery? Slick surfaces mean biofilm or early algae, which means chlorine has been low for a while.

Is the pump running? No circulation means no filtration and, in a salt pool, no chlorine being produced at all.

Debris on the surface or floor? Not dangerous in itself, but a reasonable proxy for how closely anyone is paying attention.
