You are looking at a photograph of a villa suspended over turquoise water, with a private pool three metres from a lagoon, and a reasonable question forms: if the whole island is surrounded by ocean, what is actually in that pool? The answer turns out to be more interesting than either option people usually guess. The overwhelming majority of resort pools in the Maldives are freshwater, and that fresh water did not arrive by boat or fall from the sky. It was manufactured on the island that morning out of the same sea you can see from the sun lounger.
There is a second layer to the question, and it is where most confusion comes from. “Salt water pool” means two completely different things depending on who is saying it. To a traveller it usually means a pool filled with sea water. To a pool professional it means a freshwater pool with about 3,000 parts per million of dissolved salt in it, so that a generator can produce chlorine on site. Those two things are about ten times apart in salinity and feel nothing alike to swim in.
So the honest answer to whether Maldives resort pools are salt or freshwater depends on which definition the resort is using, and this page untangles all three possibilities: desalinated freshwater, salt-chlorinated freshwater, and genuine seawater. The short answer
Most resort pools in the Maldives are freshwater, produced on the island by reverse osmosis desalination of sea water. A minority are salt-chlorinated, which still means freshwater but with a small amount of salt added so a chlorine generator can work. Pools filled with actual sea water are unusual and, where they exist, are normally presented as a novelty or a marine feature rather than the main swimming pool.
The lagoon, of course, is right there. Resorts know that guests who want salt water can walk into the Indian Ocean, and that the point of the pool is to be the other thing: clear, temperature-controlled, and rinseable.
Two words that cause all the confusion. When a resort says “salt water pool” it almost always means a salt chlorine generator system at around 3,000 ppm, not sea water at 35,000 ppm. If salinity matters to you, ask which one they mean.
The three kinds of pool you will actually encounter

The middle column is the one worth understanding, because it is where the marketing and the reality diverge most. A salt-chlorinated pool is a chlorine pool. The salt exists so that a cell in the plumbing can split it and produce chlorine continuously, and the chlorine reverts to salt after it has done its job. Why an island nation fills its pools with fresh water
It looks backwards until you know two things about the Maldives.
The first is that these islands have almost no natural fresh water. They are low coral atolls, most of them a couple of metres above sea level, sitting on porous coral sand. What groundwater exists forms a thin freshwater lens floating on top of denser salt water, and it is fragile, easily contaminated, and nowhere near enough to supply a resort with two hundred guests taking showers. So every resort already operates a desalination plant as a basic condition of existing.
The second is that sea water is genuinely difficult to keep in a swimming pool. At 35,000 ppm it corrodes pumps, degrades seals, attacks grout and tile adhesive, pits stainless steel fittings, and leaves salt deposits on every surface it evaporates from. Running a seawater pool means accepting a maintenance burden many times higher than a freshwater pool for a result most guests do not prefer.
Put those together and freshwater is not a luxury decision, it is the obvious one. The desalination plant is already there, the equipment lasts longer, and guests get exactly what they came for: a clear, calm, controllable body of water to cool off in between trips to the actual sea.
Where the water in the pool actually comes from
Nearly every Maldivian resort island runs its own reverse osmosis plant, usually tucked away in a back-of-house area guests never see.
Typically through a beach well or an intake in the lagoon, which gives some natural pre-filtering through sand before the water reaches the plant.
Sand filters and cartridge filters take out particulates, and antiscalant is dosed to stop minerals fouling the membranes downstream.
This is the reverse osmosis stage. Pressure pushes water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane while salt and other dissolved solids are held back. It is energy-intensive, which is why resorts care about water use.
RO water comes out almost too pure, so minerals are added back for taste and to stop it being aggressive to pipework. It is then stored and distributed to villas, kitchens, laundry and pools.
The concentrated salt stream left over is discharged, ideally well offshore and diffused, since concentrated brine in a shallow lagoon is bad for coral and seagrass.
From there it behaves exactly like a pool anywhere else: filtration, circulation, pH and chlorine control, and regular testing.
This is also why you will see polite notices in Maldivian villas asking you to reuse towels and be mindful of water use, on an island completely surrounded by water. Every litre in that shower cost diesel or solar generation to produce.
How to tell which kind of pool you are standing in
You can work this out in about thirty seconds without asking anyone, though asking is faster.
There are a couple of physical giveaways too. If you can see the pool plant, a salt-chlorinated system has a distinctive cylinder plumbed into the return line with a thick cable running to a control box, which is the cell. A seawater pool will usually have visible salt staining around fittings and a noticeably shorter list of metal components. And a resort running salt chlorination often mentions it on signage, because it is a selling point.
If the taste test seems unscientific, it is actually the most reliable one available to a guest. Human taste detects salt at surprisingly low concentrations, and the gap between 3,000 ppm and 35,000 ppm is not subtle.
Overwater villa plunge pools
This is the specific case most people are picturing, and the answer is consistent: those private pools are freshwater, plumbed into the same treated supply as the villa’s shower.
The reasoning is practical. An overwater villa is a timber and steel structure standing in a lagoon, and adding a body of concentrated salt water to it, suspended above corrosion-prone framing, is not something any engineer wants to sign off. The pumps and filters serving a small plunge pool would also suffer badly. And there is a straightforward guest-experience argument: the sea is directly below the deck, reachable by a ladder. If you want salt water, it is right there. The pool exists to be the alternative.
Some resorts do circulate chilled water through villa pools during hotter months, or heat them in cooler ones, which is far easier to do with fresh water in a closed loop than with sea water constantly exchanging.

Infinity pools and why they look connected to the ocean
An infinity pool is an optical trick and nothing more. One or more edges of the pool are built fractionally lower than the water level so water spills continuously over a knife edge, which removes the visual boundary between the pool surface and the horizon behind it. Photograph it from the right height and the pool appears to merge with the sea.
Behind that edge is a catch basin, hidden below the sightline, collecting the overflow. A pump returns it to the pool, and the whole thing is a closed loop with its own filtration and chemical treatment. No sea water enters at any point, and none of the pool water leaves for the ocean.
It is worth knowing this because the illusion is so effective that a lot of people assume infinity pools must be seawater. They are among the most carefully controlled pools on a resort, because the disappearing edge only works if the water level is held within a very narrow band, which requires constant top-up from, again, the desalination plant.

The tear comparison is the one that makes the salt-chlorinated experience make sense. Because a salt pool is less salty than the fluid already in your eye, it does not draw moisture out the way sea water does. That is the entire reason a 3,000 ppm pool feels nothing like the ocean despite both being described as salt water. What each type does to skin, hair and swimwear
If you are on a beach holiday you are probably in and out of water several times a day, so this is not a trivial question.
Desalinated freshwater pool
Chlorinated, so mildly drying on skin and hair. If the pool is dosed manually and chloramines build up, this is the option most likely to sting eyes and smell strongly. Colours in swimwear fade with repeated exposure, as in any chlorine pool.
Salt-chlorinated pool
Usually the most comfortable of the three. Continuous dosing keeps chloramines low, so less smell and less eye irritation. Still chlorinated, so still drying, and the salt adds a small drying effect of its own. Most guests describe the water as softer.
Sea water
The harshest on hair, because evaporating salt pulls moisture out of the hair shaft and leaves it stiff. Stings the eyes. Leaves a salt film on skin. Wonderful to swim in, which is why the ocean is there, but not what you want in a pool you use five times a day.
The single most effective thing you can do, whichever pool you end up with, is rinse in fresh water immediately after swimming and wet your hair before you get in, since hair that is already saturated absorbs less pool water. The environmental side of a freshwater pool on a coral atoll
Filling swimming pools with manufactured fresh water on a low-lying island is not without cost, and it is worth being clear-eyed about it rather than pretending otherwise.
Reverse osmosis is energy-hungry. Pushing sea water through membranes at pressure takes significant electricity, and on many islands that electricity has historically come from diesel generators, although solar capacity has grown considerably across Maldivian resorts. The brine left behind is roughly twice as salty as the sea it came from, and discharging it carelessly into a shallow lagoon harms seagrass and coral, so responsible operators diffuse it well offshore.
Set against that, resorts have real incentives to be efficient, because every unit of water costs them money to produce. Many now cover pools overnight to cut evaporation, harvest rainwater during the monsoon, recycle greywater for irrigation, and use variable-speed pumps to reduce circulation energy. Some have moved to salt chlorination partly because it removes the need to ship chlorine drums to a remote island, which is both a logistics saving and an environmental one.
If this matters to you when choosing a resort, the questions worth asking are about solar capacity, brine discharge management, rainwater harvesting and whether pools are covered at night. The Maldives is not unusual in this, and the pattern holds anywhere with limited fresh water and a lot of coastline.

The interesting trend across all of them is the same one happening in domestic pools: salt chlorination is spreading, because it reduces chemical handling and produces water guests prefer. What to ask before you book, if it matters to you
“Are your pools freshwater, salt-chlorinated, or sea water?” Ask it with all three options named, because a one-word question invites a one-word answer that may not mean what you think.
“Is the villa pool heated or chilled?” In the hottest months a small unshaded plunge pool can reach an unpleasant temperature. Chilling is a genuine luxury feature and worth knowing about.
“How is the main pool sanitised?” Useful if anyone in your party is sensitive to chloramines. A salt-chlorinated pool will usually be more comfortable for them.
“Is there a freshwater shower by the pool and beach?” Small detail, big difference across a week of swimming.
“Do you have a natural or lagoon-fed pool?” If sea water is what you actually want, some resorts do have one, and it is often the most memorable water on the property.

Are resort pools in the Maldives salt or freshwater?
The large majority are freshwater, produced on the island by desalinating sea water through reverse osmosis. A smaller number are salt-chlorinated, which is still freshwater but carries around 3,000 ppm of dissolved salt so a generator can make chlorine on site. Pools filled with raw sea water are uncommon and are usually presented as a feature rather than a default, since guests generally prefer to rinse the ocean off rather than swim in more of it.
Why are Maldives resort pools freshwater when they are surrounded by ocean?

Taste is the clearest test. Genuine sea water is unmistakably salty, a salt-chlorinated pool tastes very faintly salty at most, and a conventional freshwater pool tastes of nothing. Look for a cell in the plumbing near the pool plant, or for signage, and check whether the pool has a strong chlorine smell, which usually means conventional chlorine dosing. Asking the pool attendant is faster than any of this and they will know.
Do overwater villa pools in the Maldives use sea water?
Almost never. Private plunge pools on overwater villas are plumbed into the resort’s freshwater system exactly like the villa’s shower, and are filtered and sanitised separately. The lagoon sits directly beneath the deck if you want salt water, which is precisely why the pool itself is fresh. Filling a small suspended pool with corrosive sea water on a timber structure would be an expensive maintenance decision.
Are Maldives infinity pools filled with sea water?
No. Infinity pools are designed so the water surface visually merges with the ocean horizon, but the pool is a completely separate closed system with its own filtration, and the water is fresh. The disappearing edge spills into a catch basin below and is pumped back into the pool. The illusion is entirely architectural and has nothing to do with the water being connected to the sea.
Is a salt water pool the same as swimming in the sea?

Do Maldives resorts have any sea water pools at all?

Are Maldives resort pools heated or chilled?
Both happen, and chilling is the more relevant one. Air and sea temperatures in the Maldives sit in the high twenties to low thirties Celsius year round, so a small unshaded plunge pool can become uncomfortably warm by mid-afternoon. Higher-end properties often chill villa pools for exactly this reason. Heating is rarely needed except occasionally at night or during cooler monsoon periods.
Is the water in a Maldives resort pool safe to swallow?
