Why salt pools feel gentler, mechanism by mechanism
1. Chloramines stay lower
A cell adds a small amount of chlorine continuously through every filtration cycle, so free chlorine is always topped up and chloramines have less opportunity to accumulate. Most systems also have a boost mode that periodically clears them. This is the single biggest reason for the comfort difference.
2. No chlorine spikes

What does not change
It is still chlorinated water. The same hypochlorous acid, at the same concentration. Anyone expecting a chlorine-free swim will be disappointed.
It still dries skin. Chlorine removes sebum, and sebum is what keeps water in the skin. A long swim in any pool leaves skin drier than it started.
It still fades swimwear. Slower without the spikes, but the mechanism is unchanged.
It offers no mineral or therapeutic effect. Sodium chloride at a tenth of sea water concentration does not deliver anything comparable to salt therapy.
Bad chemistry still stings. pH at 8.2 in a salt pool is just as uncomfortable as pH at 8.2 anywhere else.
Can you open your eyes in a salt water pool?
This comes up a lot, and the answer is genuinely more positive than for other pool types.
Most people can open their eyes in a well-run salt pool without the immediate sting they get in a public chlorine pool or in the sea. Two things are responsible. First, chloramines are the main cause of that burning sensation, and they are low. Second, salinity: the eye’s tear film sits somewhere around 6,000 to 9,000 ppm, and a salt pool at 3,000 ppm is below that. Water less salty than your tears does not draw moisture out of the eye. Keep swims shorter at first. Twenty minutes tells you a lot more safely than two hours does.

Moisturise while skin is still damp. Applying within a few minutes of rinsing seals in water rather than letting it evaporate.
Keep the pool’s pH tight. If someone in the household has sensitive skin, holding pH at 7.4 is the highest-value thing you can do.

Hair is where expectations most often exceed reality. Chlorinated water opens the hair cuticle and strips natural oils, leaving hair drier and more porous, and that happens in a salt pool exactly as it does in any other. The salt adds a small additional drying effect, though nothing like sea water, which leaves hair stiff because evaporating salt pulls moisture out of the shaft.
The steadier chlorine level helps a little, since hair is not exposed to post-shock peaks. Colour-treated hair still fades, and lighter or chemically treated hair still picks up discolouration where copper is present in the water, which comes from fill water or from certain algaecides rather than from the salt.

Slightly better, and worth being honest about the size of the effect.
Chlorine degrades elastane and fades dye, and both pools contain it. What a salt pool avoids is the peak: fabric in a tablet pool sees 6 to 10 ppm in the day or two after shocking, and those peaks do disproportionate damage. Sitting steadily at 2 to 3 ppm is kinder over a season.
Expect a modest extension of swimwear life rather than a transformation. Rinsing costumes in fresh water immediately after every swim, and drying them out of direct sun, does considerably more than the pool type does.

Two purposes. It rinses off sweat, sunscreen and body oils that would otherwise become chloramines, which helps everyone in the pool. And it saturates your skin and hair with fresh water so they absorb less pool water.
Hair behaves like a sponge. Wet hair takes up far less chlorinated water than dry hair, which is a small habit with a disproportionate effect over a season.

Those practices rely on two things a pool does not have. Concentration, since therapeutic salt water is typically ten to a hundred times saltier than a pool. And mineral composition, since the waters people associate with skin benefits are rich in magnesium, potassium, bromide and other minerals.
