Ask most people what a salt water pool is and you will get some version of “a pool without chlorine”. How salt turns into chlorine, in plain language
The device doing the work is the salt cell, a short section of pipe on the equipment pad with a stack of coated titanium plates inside it. Water flows through, a low-voltage direct current passes between the plates, and that current splits the dissolved salt. Sodium chloride is sodium plus chlorine, and once you break the bond the chlorine immediately reacts with the water to form hypochlorous acid.
Hypochlorous acid is the active sanitiser. It is the same molecule that does the killing in a pool dosed with tablets, liquid chlorine or granular shock. Whatever product you buy, it ends up as hypochlorous acid in the water, which is why chemists find the salt versus chlorine debate slightly amusing. The pool does not care where the molecule came from.
The genuinely clever part is what happens next. When hypochlorous acid does its job and oxidises whatever it has found in the water, it reverts to chloride, which is to say it turns back into the salt it started as. That salt is still dissolved in the pool, ready to pass through the cell again. The cycle is close to a loop. You are not consuming salt to make chlorine so much as borrowing it repeatedly.

Two rows deserve a comment. How salty is the water, really?
People imagine something close to the sea, which is the other half of the misunderstanding. A salt pool is about a tenth as salty as the ocean, and that is not a small difference in feel.

That comparison with tears is the useful one. Because pool water is less salty than the fluid already in your eye, it does not draw moisture out the way seawater does. Chloramines are the culprit
That sharp smell at an indoor pool, the red eyes, the itchy skin after a long swim: those come from combined chlorine, or chloramines. Chloramines form when free chlorine reacts with the nitrogen compounds swimmers bring in with them, principally sweat, body oils, sunscreen and urine. The paradox is that a strong chlorine smell means a pool has too little effective chlorine, not too much, because the chlorine has already been consumed and converted.

Steady dosing rather than spikes
A tablet-fed pool tends to sawtooth. Chlorine climbs after you fill the feeder or throw in shock, then declines all week until the next dose. So do you ever add chlorine to a salt water pool?
Not as a routine, but yes, and anyone who tells you never is setting you up for a green pool. A salt cell is very good at maintaining a sanitiser level against normal demand. It is not good at recovering from a crisis, because it produces a small amount continuously rather than a large amount quickly.
When the cell is down or being cleaned. No cell means no chlorine production. A day or two is fine, longer than that in warm weather and you need to dose manually to hold a residual.
After heavy rain or a big storm. Rain dilutes stabiliser, drops salt, and dumps organic material in. The generator will take days to catch up on its own.

What you still have to buy for a salt pool
The pitch that a salt pool needs no chemicals is the second-biggest myth after the chlorine-free one. What actually happens is that one line item on your shopping list gets much smaller and the others stay roughly the same.

Where the chlorine-free idea came from
It is worth understanding why this myth is so sticky, because it helps you read pool marketing more sceptically in general.
Part of it is language. “Salt water pool” sounds like an alternative category to “chlorine pool”, the way decaf sounds like an alternative to coffee. If the industry had settled on “chlorine generator pool”, which is what the equipment is called, nobody would be confused. Part of it is that the experience really is different enough that people reasonably conclude the chemistry must be different too.
And part of it is that plenty of advertising has leaned on phrases like “no more harsh chemicals” and “chlorine-free swimming” without technically claiming there is no chlorine. Those phrases are doing a lot of work. There is a meaningful truth underneath, in that you handle far fewer chemicals yourself, but the water in the pool is chlorinated water.
If you genuinely need a non-chlorine pool, for example because of a diagnosed sensitivity, a salt system is not the answer. A lot of people arrive at this question because someone in the household reacts badly to pools, so it deserves a straight answer rather than a reassuring one.
Genuine allergy to chlorine is rare. What is common is irritant contact dermatitis and eye irritation caused by chloramines and by water that is out of balance, particularly water with a pH well outside the comfortable range. Because those are the specific things a salt pool tends to improve, most people who describe themselves as chlorine-sensitive do find a salt pool more comfortable, sometimes dramatically so.

Because the chlorine is manufactured continuously rather than stored, a salt pool has no buffer beyond the residual already dissolved in the water. That residual is consumed by sunlight and swimmers within a couple of days.
In practice you get a fairly predictable sequence. Free chlorine drops below 1 ppm, then to zero. Within another day or two in warm weather the water loses its clarity slightly. Then algae, usually starting on the shaded steps or in a corner with poor circulation. From there it accelerates quickly.
