Draw the room to scale on graph paper where each square represents one square foot, then count the squares that fall inside the outline, treating a square more than half inside as whole and ignoring one less than half inside. The count approximates the area in square feet. To see the whole process on a realistic room, walk through a living room that is not a plain rectangle.
