The only way to be sure is to ask the supplier whether you are buying straight mineral topsoil or a blend, since labeling is inconsistent and quality varies widely.

How much compost do I add for a raised bed?

For a new raised bed, blend topsoil and compost at about 2:1 or 3:1, so compost makes up a quarter to a third of the fill. Raised beds drain freely and can carry a slightly richer mix than in-ground beds, and vegetable beds in particular reward the richer 2:1 end. Mix the two evenly rather than layering, and fill a little over the top because the blend settles as the compost breaks down. If your topsoil is heavy with clay, add a couple of inches of coarse sand or aeration material to keep the bed from packing tight. Plan to top up compost each year as it decomposes.

Should I put compost or topsoil on my lawn?

For an established lawn, use compost alone as a thin quarter-inch to half-inch topdressing, ideally after aerating, so it filters down between the grass blades without smothering them. Do not spread a thick layer of topsoil over living grass, because it can bury and kill the lawn. For a brand-new lawn, use a lean blend of about 3:1 or 4:1 topsoil to compost worked into the top few inches of graded soil, keeping compost to a quarter of the mix or less so you do not encourage weeds and thatch. In short: topsoil to build the soil for a new lawn, compost alone to feed and improve an existing one.

Topsoil and compost do different jobs and are not interchangeable. Topsoil is mineral soil that provides the bulk, body, and structure of a bed, while compost is decomposed organic matter that enriches soil but is too rich, too wet, and too prone to shrinking to grow in on its own. For most plantings you need both: use topsoil for the volume and blend compost through it at about 2:1 or 3:1 topsoil to compost, keeping compost to 20 to 33 percent of the mix. For existing soil, dig in 1 to 3 inches of compost. Use topsoil alone for filling and leveling, and compost alone for topdressing a lawn or established bed.
