Most Diamond Dynasty players treat the lineup screen as a one-time chore. They drag their best cards into a roughly sensible order during the first week of the game year, and then they never touch it again unless a new pack pull forces a change. That habit makes perfect sense for winning baseball games. It makes almost no sense for grinding PXP.
Here’s the core insight this entire article is built on: PXP is earned through stat actions, and stat actions are rationed by the lineup. A card can’t record a hit if it never comes to the plate. It can’t record a putout if it’s sitting on the bench. It can’t strike anyone out if it’s fourth in your rotation and you only play three games this week. Everything else multiplies that base.

2. The Plate-Appearance Economy: Why Slot 1 and Slot 9 Live in Different Worlds
Baseball’s batting order isn’t a circle that everyone travels equally — it’s a queue that gets cut off when the game ends. Over nine innings, your team sends somewhere in the neighborhood of 36 to 42 hitters to the plate, depending on how many runners you put on base. Divide that by nine lineup slots and you get an average of roughly four plate appearances per slot. But that average hides the part that matters for grinding: the distribution is tilted toward the top of the order, every single game, by structural necessity.

Small per-game gap, massive grind-scale gap
A difference of 0.9 plate appearances between slot 1 and slot 9 sounds trivial — less than one trip to the plate. But grinds aren’t measured in single games. Suppose your focus card needs an illustrative 7,500 PXP to climb from Parallel IV to Parallel V (the brutal final stretch we mapped in the parallel thresholds reference), and suppose your card earns an illustrative average of 18 PXP per plate appearance once hits, bases, and runs are accounted for.

Every baserunner your team generates pushes the lineup further around the queue, which means good offensive lineups raise every slot’s plate-appearance count. A lineup that bats around once per game adds an entire extra plate appearance to most slots. 3. Batting Order Strategy, Slot by Slot
Knowing that higher slots get more plate appearances is the headline, but the slots aren’t interchangeable beyond raw volume. Each spot in the order comes with a different context profile — different odds of batting with runners on, different exposure to RBI chances, different likelihood of leading off an inning with the bases empty. Because PXP rewards a menu of outcomes (hits, extra bases, runs scored, RBI, walks, and so on), the context a slot provides shapes which stat actions your card is most likely to record.
Slot 1 — the volume king
Leadoff maximizes plate appearances, full stop. It also guarantees one bases-empty plate appearance per game (the first inning) and tends to produce more of them overall, which slightly suppresses RBI opportunities. For most grind cards, that trade is worth it: volume beats context, because every plate appearance carries the chance of a hit, a walk, or extra bases regardless of who’s on base. Slot 2 — nearly the same volume, better context
The two-hole gives up only a fraction of a plate appearance per game compared to leadoff, and in exchange it bats behind a hitter who’s frequently on base. For cards with real power, that means more multi-base events with runners aboard: doubles that drive in runs, homers worth a hit plus bases plus RBI plus a run scored. Because PXP systems typically pay for each of those components separately, a productive two-hole plate appearance can be worth more raw PXP than the identical swing with bases empty. Slot 3 — the traditionalist’s compromise
Slot 3 still sits comfortably in the high-volume zone and historically receives the richest blend of runners-on situations early in games. The downside is subtle: the three-hitter frequently ends up batting with two outs in the first inning after the top two go down, which mutes some run-production upside. It remains an excellent home for a second grind card when your primary occupies slots 1 or 2.
Slots 4–5 — the secondary grind zone
The cleanup and five spots lose noticeable volume relative to leadoff (roughly a third of a plate appearance per game in our illustrative ladder) but retain strong RBI context. These slots are where your third and fourth priority grind cards live in a multi-card lineup. Slots 6–9 — the no-grind zone
Here’s the rule that simplifies everything: cards batting sixth or lower are not being grinded. These slots belong to the supporting cast — high-contact, high-on-base cards whose job is to keep the lineup turning over and feed extra plate appearances to the grind cards above them. 4. Positions, the DH Slot & What Defense Is Actually Worth
Batting order is the loud lever; position selection is the quiet one. For hitters, defensive stat actions — putouts, assists, the occasional highlight play — typically contribute a much smaller share of per-game PXP than plate appearances do. But “smaller” isn’t “zero,” and position choices carry knock-on effects that matter more than their direct PXP value: lineup flexibility, secondary-position eligibility, and mission requirements.
The defensive opportunity gradient

New grinders often assume the designated hitter slot is wasted because the card “only does half the job.” The math says otherwise. Since plate appearances dominate hitter PXP, a DH at the top of the order out-earns a ninth-slot center fielder comfortably in most scoring configurations. There are two genuine cautions. First, if your card’s Parallel Mods or an active program mission require fielding statistics — innings at a position, putouts, assists — the DH slot silently stalls that requirement while the PXP bar keeps moving. Secondary positions: the flexibility dividend
A card with secondary-position eligibility is worth more to a grind lineup than its ratings suggest, because it can slide into whichever slot your current grind priorities leave open. When choosing between two similar grind candidates, the one that covers two positions lets you run an extra focus card somewhere else in the lineup. This is also why playing a card slightly out of position — accepting a small defensive penalty to keep a grind bat in the order — is usually correct for offline grinding, where opponent quality is forgiving. Common misconfiguration: benching a focus card for “defensive reasons” in offline grind modes. On lower difficulties, the CPU rarely punishes a stretched defense enough to matter, and every benched game is a 100% PXP loss for that card. 5. Pitcher Slots & Rotation Order: The Lineup Decision Hitters Don’t Have
Pitchers live under a completely different opportunity system. A hitter’s volume is rationed per game by batting slot; a pitcher’s volume is rationed across games by rotation order and usage decisions. One start can deliver more PXP than a hitter earns in three games — outs recorded, strikeouts, innings completed, and a win all stack — but the card only collects when it actually pitches. Rotation order is batting order, stretched across days
If you’re grinding one starting pitcher, put it first in the rotation — the same logic as batting your focus card leadoff. The first rotation slot pitches the first game of every session and cycles back fastest. In modes where you can manually select your starter per game (most offline modes allow this), the rotation screen matters less; the discipline that matters is actually selecting your grind arm every game you intend to count, rather than letting the auto-selected “rested” starter eat your session.
The energy/stamina constraint
Pitcher grinding runs into the fatigue system: ride one starter every single game and the stamina hit degrades performance, which on higher difficulties degrades results, which degrades PXP per inning. The standard workaround for short-game farming — where each start is only three innings — is that the stamina cost per start is modest, letting a single grind arm start far more frequently than a nine-inning workload would permit. Relievers: small windows, deliberate usage
Grinding a relief pitcher is an exercise in manufactured opportunity. An inning or two per game is the natural ceiling, so the play is to script the appearance: pull your starter at a planned point, bring the grind reliever in for a fixed window every game, and treat its accumulation as a slow-drip secondary project rather than a primary grind. Stacking a grind closer behind a grind starter in three-inning games — starter throws two, closer throws one — is a tidy way to run two pitching projects simultaneously.

6. Substitution Tactics That Multiply Your Grind
Substitutions are the most underused tool in the PXP meta, probably because they require in-game attention rather than a one-time menu setup. But the principle is powerful: a game’s plate appearances are a fixed pie, and substitutions let you decide who eats the late slices. PXP accrues to whichever card actually records the stat action, so a card subbed in during the fifth inning earns full credit for everything it does from that point forward.
The relay pattern: two cards, one batting slot
The cleanest substitution play is the relay. Your primary focus card starts the game in the leadoff slot and takes its first three plate appearances — usually complete by the fifth or sixth inning of a nine-inning game. Then you pinch-hit or defensively swap your secondary grind card into that same slot for the remaining two-ish plate appearances. The result: your primary banks the lion’s share of the premium slot’s volume, and your secondary harvests plate appearances that would otherwise have gone to a card you don’t care about.

The swap window isn’t arbitrary. Subbing too early starves Card A of its third plate appearance; subbing too late leaves Card B with a single trip or none. The sweet spot in nine-inning games is right after Card A’s third plate appearance, wherever in the middle innings that lands. Glance at the box score, not the inning number.
One-way doors: the rules that bite
Baseball’s substitution rules apply in full, and two of them regularly burn grinders:
No re-entry
Once a card leaves the game, it’s out for good. If you sub your focus card out in a game that goes to extra innings, those bonus plate appearances belong to the replacement. In modes prone to long games, sub conservatively.
The DH forfeit
Moving players across the DH boundary carelessly can forfeit the DH slot entirely, forcing your pitcher’s spot into the order and torching a premium lineup slot. Use straight positional swaps or pinch-hits into the same slot to stay safe.
Pinch-hitting as a micro-grind
For cards that need only a sliver of PXP — say, an illustrative 150 points to tick over a parallel threshold before a roster lock or a program deadline — dedicated games are overkill. Pinch-hit them once per game in a bottom-order slot during your normal sessions. One plate appearance per game sounds glacial, but across a week of Conquest farming it quietly closes small gaps with zero added playtime. It’s the same logic as the “passive drift” leveling that theme-team builders rely on, scaled down to a single card.
The qualification caveat
One honest warning before you build an elaborate platoon system: some mission types, program tasks, and stat-milestone requirements care about appearances or games played, not just raw stat actions. A card that only ever pinch-hits may rack up PXP while failing to satisfy a “play N games” style requirement attached to a mod or program. PXP itself doesn’t discriminate — partial games count fully — but adjacent systems sometimes do. When a card matters for a program, double-check the requirement wording before committing to partial-game usage. 7. Three Lineup Archetypes, Fully Worked

Everything so far assumed a nine-inning canvas. Most actual grinding doesn’t happen on one. Game length and mode rules reshape the plate-appearance ladder dramatically, and a lineup optimized for the wrong format leaks value every game.
Three-inning games: the ladder becomes a cliff
In the three-inning formats that dominate Conquest farming and short Mini Seasons configurations, a team typically sends somewhere around 12 to 15 hitters to the plate. That means slots 1 through 3 are guaranteed two plate appearances in most games, slots 4 and 5 usually get two, and slots 6 through 9 frequently get exactly one — or zero if your innings end quickly. The gentle 0.1-PA-per-slot gradient of nine-inning play becomes a hard cliff after the fifth spot.
The practical consequence: in three-inning modes, your lineup is effectively five slots deep. Stack every grind card into slots 1–5 and treat 6–9 as pure filler. A grind card batting seventh in a three-inning game is, statistically, barely playing. Nine-inning games: depth pays again
In full-length offline games and longer Mini Seasons settings, the bottom of the order returns to relevance — slot 7 still sees nearly four plate appearances. Nine-inning sessions are where the multi-card conveyor and relay substitution patterns shine, because there’s enough volume to split meaningfully. If your evening plan is a couple of long games rather than a dozen short ones, lean into depth: six grind cards can all make real progress in a nine-inning lineup, where the same six would starve in a three-inning one.
Online modes: competitiveness taxes the grind
Ranked, Events, and Battle Royale add the variable this article can’t optimize away: a human opponent. Online lineups face real tradeoffs — a stretched defense gets exposed, a weak-hitting grind card in the two-hole costs you runs against good pitching, and early quits or mercy endings truncate everyone’s volume unpredictably. The general rule: online lineups are competitive-first, and PXP is the byproduct, sweetened by whatever online earning bonuses are active (covered in our online PXP comparison). If a grind card happens to be genuinely good, bat it high and enjoy the double dip. If it isn’t, don’t sabotage your record for plate appearances you can farm offline at triple the comfort.
Difficulty interacts with everything above
One more interaction worth naming: difficulty multipliers scale the value of each stat action, while the lineup scales the count. A leadoff card on a higher difficulty compounds both levers — more plate appearances, each worth more — but only if your performance holds up, since strikeouts and quick innings shrink the plate-appearance pie for everyone. 9. Measuring Results & Iterating: The Feedback Loop
A lineup change you don’t measure is a lineup change you can’t trust. The good news is that measuring this is easy, because the game hands you a box score after every contest and a PXP tally on every card screen. The loop has three steps, and a full cycle takes about five games.
Step one: capture a baseline
Before touching anything, note each grind card’s current PXP total, then play five games with your existing lineup in your normal mode and difficulty. Divide the PXP gained by five. That’s your per-game baseline — the number every change will be judged against. 10. The 7-Step Lineup Setup Routine
Everything above, compressed into a routine you can run in under five minutes before any grind session. Pair it with the broader pre-grind checklist — which covers settings, difficulty, and session prep — and your setup overhead stays tiny while your output doesn’t.
Write down (mentally is fine) which cards you’re leveling, in priority order. If you haven’t settled the focus-versus-spread question, resolve it first — the lineup can’t optimize a decision you haven’t made.
Scan Parallel Mods and active program tasks for fielding, appearance, or position requirements. Any card with a fielding milestone is barred from the DH slot; any card with a games-played requirement is a poor fit for pinch-hit-only usage.
Three-inning session: grind cards in slots 1–5 only. Nine-inning session: grind cards can extend to slot 6, and the relay pattern comes into play. Set this per session, not once per game year.
Priority 1 bats first (or second, if it’s a slugger you want in RBI spots). Priority 2 takes the adjacent slot. Continue down. No grind card below the depth line from step 3.
Remaining slots go to your best on-base hitters regardless of grind status. Their job is generating baserunners so your grind slots bat more often. Resolve position conflicts with the DH slot and secondary eligibility.

Five Lineup Mistakes That Quietly Tax Every Game

The set-and-forget lineup. Built in week one, never revisited. Grind priorities change weekly; a lineup that doesn’t change with them is always taxing your current project to feed a finished one.
Grind cards below the depth line. A focus card batting seventh in three-inning Conquest is getting one plate appearance a game — a 50%+ volume cut versus leadoff in that format. The cliff is real.
Nine grind cards, zero queue-turners. An all-project lineup with weak on-base skills suppresses total team plate appearances, shrinking everyone’s pie. The supporting cast is part of the optimization.
DH-ing a card with fielding milestones. The PXP bar moves, the mod requirement doesn’t, and the discovery usually happens dozens of games too late. Check mods before assigning the DH slot.
Unscripted substitutions. Subbing the focus card out before its third plate appearance, or burning it across the DH boundary, donates premium volume to filler cards. If there’s no plan, don’t sub.
