Chipotle
Chipotle is a public company, and half the questions people ask about it are answered under oath in its SEC filings rather than anywhere on its website.
How many restaurants are there. Can you buy a franchise. Which countries is it in. How much have prices actually gone up. Those get answered on the internet with confident numbers and no source, and they are all disclosed, precisely and on a schedule, in documents Chipotle files with the Securities and Exchange Commission because it has to. Almost nobody writing about Chipotle reads them.
These 48 guides cover the practical side: the menu and what is in it, prices item by item, ordering and delivery, hours and locations, rewards and gift cards, eating there sensibly, and working there. Below the post list is the corporate layer, taken from the annual report, the quarterly filings and the company newsroom. It is the part that can be checked, and it settles several arguments that otherwise go on forever.
To build a specific order and see the nutrition, the Chipotle nutrition calculator has the ingredient tables and does the arithmetic. This page is about the company behind the counter.
Everything Chipotle reports about itself, from the most recent filings
These come from the annual report for the 2025 financial year and the quarterly report for the three months ended 30 June 2026. Figures for a public company of this size are audited or reviewed, which is a meaningfully different standard from a number on a food blog.
| Measure | Figure | As of |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurants worldwide | Over 4,200 | 30 June 2026 |
| Company-owned restaurants, United States | 4,074 | 30 June 2026 |
| Company-owned restaurants, international | 112 | 30 June 2026 |
| Partner-operated restaurants | 15 | 30 June 2026 |
| New restaurants opened in 2025 | 334 | Full year 2025 |
| Of those, opened with a Chipotlane | 257 | Full year 2025 |
| Total revenue | $11.9B | Full year 2025 |
| Employees worldwide | 130,301 | 31 December 2025 |
| Digital share of food and beverage revenue | 36.7% | Full year 2025 |
| Comparable restaurant sales | Down 1.7% | Full year 2025 |
| Comparable restaurant sales | Up 2.2% | Quarter ended 30 June 2026 |
From the 2025 annual report filed with the SEC in February 2026, the quarterly report for the period ended 30 June 2026, and the accompanying earnings releases. Checked 17 August 2026.
Two figures worth pausing on
The first is digital. More than a third of food and beverage revenue now comes through the app and the website rather than the line, and that share has kept climbing: 35.1 percent in 2024, 36.7 percent in 2025, and 38.3 percent in the second quarter of 2026. That is the number behind the Chipotlane build-out, and it is why so many of the questions in this collection are about the app rather than the restaurant.
The second is comparable sales going backward in 2025, driven by fewer transactions rather than smaller checks, and then recovering in 2026. Chipotle stated the 2025 decline came from lower transactions of 2.9 percent partly offset by a 1.2 percent higher average check. In plain terms, fewer people came in and the ones who did spent a little more. That is the honest backdrop to every question in this collection about whether Chipotle has got expensive.
What the filings do not break out. There is no state-by-state restaurant count, no per-country count for the international company-owned restaurants, and no running system-wide total of Chipotlanes. The company reports openings per period rather than a cumulative Chipotlane figure, and the last total it published was a milestone announcement of the thousandth Chipotlane in November 2024. Anyone quoting a current Chipotlane count is estimating. How Many Chipotle Locations Are There? keeps to what is reported.
There is no Chipotle franchise, and the annual report says so in the first paragraph
This is the single most useful thing on the page, because an entire cottage industry of franchise-research websites publishes investment figures for opening a Chipotle. There is nothing to invest in. The company states its structure plainly.
Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc., a Delaware corporation, together with its subsidiaries owns and operates Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants. As of December 31, 2025, we owned 3,938 Chipotle restaurants throughout the United States and 104 international Chipotle restaurants. Additionally, we had 14 international partner-operated restaurants.
Chipotle 2025 annual report, Item 1Owns and operates. Every restaurant in the United States is the company's own, run by the company's own employees. There is no franchise program, no franchise disclosure document and no franchise fee, so any figure you find for what a Chipotle franchise costs is describing something that does not exist.
The partner-operated exception, and what it actually is
The one qualification is the small partner-operated count, and the filing defines the term rather than leaving it vague.
Partner-operated restaurants represent Chipotle restaurants over which Chipotle does not have a controlling financial interest and for which Chipotle does not directly manage day-to-day operations. This includes restaurants operated by third parties pursuant to license or franchise agreements and restaurants in which Chipotle holds a minority, non-controlling ownership interest.
Chipotle 2025 annual reportThose are all international, and they are agreements with large established operators rather than anything an individual can apply for. The company has named three partnerships publicly: the Alshaya Group in the Middle East, which opened the first Kuwait restaurant in April 2024 and the first Dubai restaurant that October; Alsea for Mexico; and a joint venture with SPC Group for Asia. Fourteen partner-operated restaurants existed at the end of 2025, all in the Middle East.
So the honest answer to how much it costs to open a Chipotle is that you cannot. Not because it is expensive, but because the company does not sell that right. If you want to run a fast-casual restaurant, the franchised chains are elsewhere. How Much to Open a Chipotle? covers what people are usually actually asking, which is what the model costs the company to build.
Four countries the company runs itself, and a separate set it does not
The international question comes up constantly and gets answered inconsistently, partly because there are two different kinds of international restaurant and most coverage merges them.
The annual report names the company-operated markets in an unlikely place, its disclosure about where its staff work: of 130,301 employees, 127,116 worked in the United States and 3,185 worked internationally across Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Those four are the markets Chipotle runs directly, holding 104 restaurants between them at the end of 2025 and 112 by the middle of 2026. The filing does not break that total down by country.
| Market | How it operates | Status |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Company owned and operated | 4,074 restaurants |
| Canada, France, Germany, United Kingdom | Company owned and operated | 112 between them |
| Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates | Partner-operated, Alshaya Group | 15 partner restaurants |
| Mexico | Development agreement with Alsea | Announced |
| Singapore and South Korea | Joint venture with SPC Group | Announced, first openings targeted for 2026 |
Company-operated markets from the 2025 annual report's human capital disclosure; restaurant counts from the quarterly report for the period ended 30 June 2026; partnership details from Chipotle's own newsroom announcements. The annual report refers to the Middle East in aggregate rather than naming Kuwait and the UAE, which come from the company's press releases.
Mexico is the one people find surprising. A chain built on a Mexican-inspired menu did not operate a single restaurant in Mexico until it signed a development agreement to do so, and even then not as a company-owned operation. That fact is worth holding next to the question of whether the food is Mexican, which is a fair question with a more interesting answer than yes or no. Is Chipotle Mexican Food? and Is There Chipotle in Canada, the UK or Hawaii? take it on.
The two states question, answered honestly
Hawaii and Alaska are widely reported to be the only two states without a Chipotle. We could not confirm that from any company filing or from Chipotle's own site, because the company does not publish a state-by-state list anywhere. The restaurant locator is the only authority on whether there is one near you, and it is the thing to check rather than an article. Where Is the Nearest Chipotle? covers finding one properly.
Three disclosed figures explain most of what has changed about going to Chipotle
A lot of the friction people write about, and a good share of the questions in this collection, come from one shift the company is open about in its filings. Chipotle is reorganizing itself around orders placed before you arrive.
| What the filings show | Figure | What it means in the restaurant |
|---|---|---|
| Digital share of food and beverage revenue | 38.3% | Roughly two in five dollars now arrive as an order placed elsewhere |
| New 2025 restaurants opened with a Chipotlane | 257 of 334 | Around three quarters of new builds are designed around pickup |
| 2025 comparable sales, transactions | Down 2.9% | Fewer visits, with a slightly higher spend per visit |
From the 2025 annual report, the quarterly report for the period ended 30 June 2026, and the accompanying earnings releases.
What follows from that
Most kitchens have a second production line for digital orders, running in parallel with the one you can see. When people say the queue moves oddly, or that the person serving them seems to be assembling somebody else's order, that is usually what is happening. It is also the most likely explanation for portioning inconsistency between an order you watched being made and one handed to you in a bag.
The app becomes a single point of failure in a way it never was for a counter-service restaurant. If it is down, you cannot place the order the pickup lane exists to serve, and there is no obvious fallback other than joining the line. That is why Is the Chipotle App Down? is a question worth answering properly rather than dismissing.
Cancellation gets harder rather than easier. An order that is already being made cannot be unmade, and the window in which you can cancel is short by design, because the whole point of ordering ahead is that production starts immediately. How to Cancel a Chipotle Order covers what the window actually is and what to do once it has closed.
The Chipotlane is not a drive-thru, and the distinction matters. There is no menu board and no ordering at a window. It is a lane for collecting an order you already placed, which means arriving without having ordered gets you nothing. That single misunderstanding accounts for a large share of the complaints about them. Does Chipotle Have a Drive Thru? sets out how to use one.
The part that has not changed
Everything about the food is still assembled in front of a person, one order at a time, from ingredients prepared in that building. The company has automated the ordering and left the making alone, which is an unusual choice at this scale and is the reason the portion argument exists at all. A machine-portioned product would be consistent and would not be this. What Is Chipotle? covers the model, and Is Chipotle a Good Place to Work? covers what running two production lines at once is like from behind the counter.
There is one authoritative source for how much Chipotle has raised prices, and it is a line in a table
Every quarter, in the section of its filings that explains what moved revenue, Chipotle reports the contribution of menu price increases as a separate figure. That is the only place the company quantifies its own price rises, and it is a specific, dated, auditable number rather than a comparison somebody made between two receipts.
For the three months ended 31 March 2026, the filing reports a menu price increase of 0.9 percent as a driver of revenue. Elsewhere the company discusses pricing only in general terms, saying cost increases were partly offset by the benefit of menu price increases, and listing among its risks its ability to raise menu prices or realize the benefit of increases against inflation.
What this means for the price figures in circulation. Claims that Chipotle raised prices by some larger percentage in a given year may well be accurate as descriptions of a particular item in a particular market, because pricing is regional and the company does not publish a national menu. What they are not is the company's own disclosed figure. If a number matters to you, the results of operations table in the quarterly filing is where the company itself stands behind one. Is Chipotle Expensive? works through value rather than just price.
Why the prices in every guide are approximate, including ours
Chipotle does not publish a national price list, and prices vary by location, by ordering channel and over time. Delivery through a third-party app is generally priced differently from ordering in the restaurant. That is why a page giving a single figure for a burrito is describing an average of something that varies, and why checking the app for your own store is the only way to get your number.
The guides in this collection give ranges and explain what drives them rather than pretending to a precision nobody has. How Much Is Chipotle? covers the menu, and How Much Is Double Meat at Chipotle? covers the add-ons where the percentage increase is steepest.
The last official wage figure Chipotle published, and what the labor statistics say
Questions about what Chipotle pays get answered constantly with current-sounding figures. The company's own last dated, quotable statement on average pay is older than most of those answers.
Chipotle Mexican Grill today announced it is increasing restaurant wages resulting in a $15 average hourly wage by the end of June.
Chipotle newsroom, 10 May 2021That release also gave a crew starting range of 11 to 18 dollars an hour depending on the market, and described a path to six-figure compensation for restaurant managers within roughly three years. We searched the annual report's human capital section and the company newsroom for a more recent average and did not find one. So any figure presented as Chipotle's current average hourly wage is either derived from job listings, reported by employees, or estimated. Those are all legitimate sources and none of them is the company.
The outside benchmark
For context rather than as a Chipotle figure, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes wages by occupation. For May 2025 it reports a median hourly wage of 15.00 dollars for fast food and counter workers, and 16.06 dollars for food and beverage serving workers, with means slightly above each. Those cover the whole industry rather than one chain, and they are the honest reference point when somebody asks whether a given restaurant pays well.
The disclosure nobody reads. Every public company must publish, in its annual proxy statement, the ratio of its chief executive's total compensation to that of its median employee. Chipotle's proxy filed in April 2026 contains that section. We could not extract the exact figures directly from the filing in the course of writing this page, and we are not repeating a second-hand version of them, because the whole point of this section is that the primary document exists and can be read. It is public, it is free, and it is linked in the sources below. How Much Do Chipotle Workers Make? and How Much Do Chipotle Managers Make? cover crew and management pay.
Three Chipotle beliefs that no company document supports
These are repeated everywhere, including by people with genuine experience of the restaurants. What none of them has is a published company policy behind it, which matters when you are planning to rely on one at the counter.
- Extra scoops are free if you ask. What circulates is that any additional portion of a listed ingredient will be added at no charge on request, treated as a standing policy. What exists is commentary about employee discretion and training around portioning, much of it prompted by the portion-size argument that ran through 2024. No page on Chipotle's site, no press release and nothing in the filings publishes a policy of free additional portions. Asking is free and may well work. It is not a right, and a page telling you it is has invented one.
- A Chipotle franchise costs a specific amount. Franchise research sites publish investment ranges for opening one. Section 02 covers why this cannot be sourced: the company owns and operates its restaurants and does not franchise in the United States, so there is no franchise for a cost to attach to. This is the cleanest example on the page of a confidently published number describing a thing that does not exist.
- Portions have exact published weights. Articles give per-scoop ounces and grams for guacamole, rice and protein as though they were specifications. Chipotle has never published a per-ingredient portion spec. Its public comments during the portion controversy addressed consistency and training in general terms. Nutrition figures are published per serving, which is a different thing from a documented scoop weight, and it is exactly why the same order can differ between two visits.
The pattern to notice. All three fill a gap the company has left open. Chipotle publishes a great deal about its finances and comparatively little about its counter operations, so the space where portion rules and staff discretion live gets filled by inference. That is not sinister and it does produce a lot of confident writing with nothing underneath it. How to Order at Chipotle sticks to what actually works at the counter.
There is a fourth worth adding, which is the belief that a particular restaurant is stricter or more generous than others because of a rule handed down centrally. Portioning guidance exists and staff training exists, and the company has never published either. What varies between two branches is the people, the volume they are handling and how the shift is going, which is a more useful thing to understand than a conspiracy.
One thing the filings do say about food
The annual report carries a substantial risk factor about food safety, naming the pathogens by name and stating that any report of food-borne illness, legitimate or rumored, could adversely affect the company's reputation. That is boilerplate in one sense and specific in another, given the company's history, and it is a reminder that the risk section of an annual report is often the most candid document a company publishes about itself. On sourcing, Chipotle's own transparency page states its commitment to finding better and more sustainable sources for all of the ingredients it serves, and describes supplier standards prohibiting forced and child labor with annual certification subject to internal audit.

Chipotle questions, answered from the filings
How many Chipotle restaurants are there?
Over 4,200 as of 30 June 2026, made up of 4,074 company-owned in the United States, 112 company-owned internationally and 15 partner-operated. The company opened 334 new restaurants in 2025, of which 257 included a Chipotlane.
Can you buy a Chipotle franchise?
No. The annual report states that the company owns and operates its restaurants, and there is no franchise program in the United States. Any published figure for what a Chipotle franchise costs is describing something that does not exist.
What are the partner-operated Chipotle restaurants?
International restaurants the company does not control or manage day to day, run under license, franchise or minority-interest arrangements. At the end of 2025 there were 14, all in the Middle East, in partnership with the Alshaya Group.
Which countries does Chipotle operate in?
The company runs its own restaurants in the United States, Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Partner-operated restaurants exist in the Middle East, and agreements have been announced for Mexico with Alsea and for Asia with SPC Group.
How much of Chipotle business is digital?
Digital sales were 36.7 percent of food and beverage revenue in 2025, up from 35.1 percent in 2024, and 38.3 percent in the quarter ended 30 June 2026. That share is what drives the Chipotlane build-out.
How much has Chipotle raised prices?
The company reports menu price increases as a line in its quarterly results. For the three months ended 31 March 2026 it disclosed a menu price increase of 0.9 percent. Other figures in circulation are not the company own disclosure.
How much does Chipotle pay?
The last official average the company published was a 15 dollar average hourly wage announced in May 2021, with a crew starting range of 11 to 18 dollars by market. For context, BLS reports a May 2025 median of 15.00 dollars an hour for fast food and counter workers.
Is a Chipotlane a drive-thru?
Not in the usual sense. It is a pickup lane for orders placed in advance through the app or website, so there is no ordering at a window. Chipotle opened 257 of them with new restaurants in 2025 alone.
What was checked, and what it said
Corporate figures here come from documents Chipotle files with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which are public and free to read, or from the company own newsroom. Where a claim has no company source, this page says so instead of repeating it.
