Where to Buy Chipotle Gift Cards: Every Store

Chipotle gift cards

It is usually a Thursday evening when this question gets asked. Somebody has a birthday tomorrow, or a leaving do, or a thank-you that has been sitting on your conscience for a two weeks, and a Chipotle gift card is exactly the right answer because everybody eats there and nobody minds getting one. The only problem is finding one in the time you have left.

The honest version is that there are five or six routes to a Chipotle gift card, they differ enormously in speed, and only one of them is guaranteed to work no matter where you live. This guide ranks them by how fast the card reaches the person, tells you which stores actually stock the physical cards and why that varies by street, and is blunt about the discount resale sites that look like the clever option and sometimes are not.

If you need it in the next ten minutes, buy an eGift card on chipotle.com and have it emailed. That is the whole answer for most people, and it works from a phone in a parking lot. If you want something physical to hand over, walk into any Chipotle and ask at the register, or check the gift card rack at a large supermarket, pharmacy or warehouse club. Everything after that is a variation on timing, discount and risk. And if you are buying for someone whose eating is a bit particular, the Chipotle nutrition calculator is a quietly useful thing to send alongside the card, because it lets them build an order before they get to the counter.

One boundary before we start. This page is about buying. If you already hold a card and want to spend it, read how to use a Chipotle gift card online, which covers redemption, activation and balance checks properly. If your question is whether the value drains away over time, that is answered in do Chipotle gift cards expire. Neither of those is repeated here.

The short answer, ranked by speed

Every route to a Chipotle gift card lands somewhere on a scale from instant to about a week. The ranking below is the one that matters, because in practice nobody is choosing between these on price. They are choosing on whether the card exists before the party starts.

eGift card from chipotle.com Emailed to the recipient, or to you to forwardMinutes
eGift card from a large online retailer Amazon, Target, Best Buy, Staples and similarMinutes to a few hours
Physical card bought in a Chipotle Activated at the register, hand it over on the spotSame day
Physical card from a supermarket rack If your local shop stocks it, which is not certainSame day
Discount resale marketplace Digital delivery, sometimes held for fraud reviewMinutes to 48 hours
Physical card mailed to you or the recipient Standard mail from an online orderSeveral days
Bulk or corporate order Account setup, approval and fulfilmentDays to weeks

Two things fall out of that list. The first is that digital is not a compromise any more. A Chipotle eGift card is the same money as a plastic one, it loads into the app in seconds, and it cannot be left in a coat pocket for a year. The second is that anything involving the post is a planning decision, not a rescue. If the occasion is tomorrow, the physical card has to be bought in person.

There is a third thing worth saying that most pages skip. The physical card is often still the better gift socially, even though it is slower and less convenient, because handing somebody an object reads as effort in a way that forwarding an email does not. If you have the time, buy plastic. If you do not, buy digital and do not feel bad about it.

Availability details on this page vary by country and by individual shop, and gift card programs get changed without announcement. Treat the retailer names here as a starting list to check, not a promise. The one route that is reliable everywhere Chipotle operates is Chipotle’s own gift card page.

Buying direct from Chipotle

Chipotle runs its own gift card store through chipotle.com, which links out to a dedicated gift card platform. This is the route to use if you want certainty. It is always in stock, it never runs out on a Friday afternoon, the card is genuine by definition, and any problem later can be taken straight to Chipotle rather than to a middleman who will point at somebody else.

eGift cards

An eGift card is a code and a barcode delivered by email. You choose an amount, type the recipient’s name and email address, add a message if you want one, and pay. In normal conditions the email lands within a few minutes. The recipient opens it, and can either add the card to their Chipotle account in the app or show the barcode at the counter.

Three features on the direct route are worth knowing about, because they turn a slightly lazy gift into a thoughtful one. You can usually schedule the delivery for a future date, which means you can buy the card three weeks early and have it arrive on the morning of the birthday. You can add a written message, which appears in the email rather than being lost on a receipt. And on some designs you can pick artwork that matches the occasion, which sounds trivial until you have received a gift card that arrives looking like an invoice.

Send it to yourself if you want to be the one who hands it over. Buying an eGift card and putting your own email address in the recipient field is entirely allowed, and it gives you a forwardable email you can send at the exact moment you want. It also means that if the address you have for the recipient turns out to be wrong, you find out immediately rather than after they have failed to receive anything.

Physical cards ordered online

Chipotle also sells physical plastic cards through the same store, mailed to an address you choose. You still pick the amount and can usually include a message, and the card arrives in a small carrier or envelope. Delivery is standard post unless you pay for something faster, so this is a route for planned gifts only. Ordering a physical card on a Wednesday for a Saturday is a gamble you will probably lose.

The useful case for this option is a card you want mailed directly to somebody else, in another state or another country, without you handling it. The awkward case is a card you want to give in person, because then you are waiting for the post yourself and you may as well have walked into a restaurant.

Amounts and limits

Chipotle’s own store lets you choose a value rather than forcing you into fixed tiers, within a range. The floor is commonly around ten dollars and the ceiling on a single card is usually a few hundred, with five hundred being a typical maximum. Those numbers do move, so read what the form actually offers rather than trusting a figure written on a blog. If you need more than the single-card maximum, you buy more than one card, which is also what the bulk route exists to make less painful.

The corporate and bulk route

Chipotle operates a separate bulk gift card channel for anyone buying roughly ten cards or more. It is a different form, sometimes a different platform, and it is designed for employee rewards, incentive programs, client thank-yous and similar. Volume purchasers can sometimes access a discount, and there are options for delivering hundreds of digital codes at once rather than typing addresses individually. There is more on this in the bulk section below, including the case for skipping gift cards entirely and booking Chipotle catering instead.

Only ever buy from a link you reached by typing chipotle.com into the address bar yourself. Fake gift card storefronts imitating restaurant brands are common, they rank in adverts, and the card you receive from one will be worthless. If a page asks for card details on a domain that is not obviously Chipotle’s, close it.

Buying one inside a Chipotle restaurant

Yes, Chipotle sells gift cards in store, and this is the answer people are usually hoping for when they type the question. Walk in, go to the register, and say you would like to buy a gift card. The cashier takes a blank card from behind the counter or from a small display, asks how much you want on it, loads it, and takes your payment. The whole thing takes under a minute and you walk out with a working card.

A few practical notes from doing this at real counters:

Ask at the register, not at the serving line. The serving line is a production line and the person assembling your burrito cannot process a gift card. Go to the end, where the payment happens. If there is a line for food, it is usually fine to step to the register directly and say you only need a gift card.

You choose the amount. Restaurant cards are almost always blank stock that gets loaded at the register, so you are not restricted to preset values. Ask for thirty-seven dollars if that is what you want. There will be a minimum, commonly around ten dollars.

The card is dead until the register activates it. This is the single most important point in this section. The plastic has no value sitting in the drawer. It becomes worth money at the moment the payment goes through, and if that step fails the card is a piece of decorated plastic. Wait for the receipt.

Keep the receipt. It is the proof of activation and the proof of value. If the card later shows a zero balance, the receipt is what gets it fixed. Slide it into the card carrier rather than the bin.

Design and carriers vary. Around the holidays there is usually seasonal artwork and sometimes a promotion attached to gift card purchases. Outside those windows you get the standard card, and possibly no carrier at all, so bring an envelope if presentation matters.

Restaurants very occasionally decline because their card stock has run out, which happens most often in December. It is worth phoning ahead if you are driving any distance, and finding your nearest Chipotle first will tell you which one to call. If the nearest store has none, the next one along usually does, because stock is delivered per restaurant rather than pooled.

One more thing about the in-restaurant route. Because Chipotle is company-operated rather than franchised in the United States, gift card handling is broadly consistent from one store to another. You are not going to hit an owner-operator with a different policy the way you might at some other chains. What varies is stock and staff familiarity, not the rules.

Supermarkets, pharmacies and the gift card rack

The wall of gift cards near the checkout of a large supermarket is where most people find restaurant cards, and Chipotle is a common enough brand to appear on plenty of them. The catch is that the rack is not a national inventory. It is a shelf, in a shop, restocked locally, and what is on it in one town is not what is on it in the next.

Shops and chains where Chipotle cards commonly turn up, in the United States, include the following categories. Treat every one of them as worth checking rather than guaranteed.

Supermarkets

The big grocery chains carry the widest restaurant selection, often an entire aisle end. Kroger and its regional banners, Safeway and Albertsons stores, Publix, Giant Eagle, Meijer, H-E-B and Wegmans are all reasonable bets. Grocery is also where gift card promotions appear, such as bonus fuel points or a store credit when you buy a certain value.

Pharmacies and convenience

CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid keep gift card racks by the front register, though the restaurant selection is narrower than a supermarket’s and skews to the largest brands. Convenience stores and gas station forecourts sometimes carry them too, usually in fixed denominations only.

Big box and warehouse clubs

Walmart and Target both stock restaurant cards, in store and online. Warehouse clubs such as Costco and Sam’s Club periodically sell multipacks of restaurant cards at a genuine discount, for example a hundred dollars of value for somewhat less. Availability there is seasonal and sells out.

Office suppliers and electronics

Staples and Office Depot carry gift cards partly because businesses buy them for staff rewards, and both sell digital versions online. Best Buy also lists restaurant eGift cards. These are useful when you want an invoice or a business account behind the purchase.

Two habits will save you a wasted trip. The first is to call the specific store and ask whether they have Chipotle on the rack today. Not the chain, the shop. Staff will normally walk over and look, and the whole call takes ninety seconds. The second is to check the retailer’s own website before you go, because most of the large chains list gift cards as products with a store-level stock indicator, and many of them also sell the same card digitally with instant email delivery.

That last point is the one people miss. If the supermarket sells the physical card in store, the same supermarket’s website very often sells a Chipotle eGift card by email as well. So a failed trip to the rack can be turned into a successful purchase from the parking lot in about two minutes.

Outside the United States the rack route mostly does not exist. Chipotle operates a small number of restaurants in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, and third party gift card distribution in those markets is thin to non-existent. Buy in the restaurant or on Chipotle’s own site for that country instead.

What the rack card actually is

A card from a supermarket rack is a normal Chipotle gift card. It is not a different product, it is not a licensed imitation, and it spends exactly the same way. The retailer is a distributor. The only differences you will notice are that rack cards usually come in fixed denominations, commonly twenty-five, fifty and sometimes ten or a hundred, and that the card is activated when it is scanned at the retailer’s register rather than at Chipotle’s.

That activation point matters as much here as it does in the restaurant. A card lifted off a rack and carried out of the shop without being paid for is worth nothing. It also means you should look at the card before you buy it, which brings us to the tampering problem covered in the scams section further down.

Marketplaces and discount resellers

There is a whole industry built on buying unwanted gift cards cheaply and selling them on at a discount. You will find Chipotle cards on those sites at perhaps five to fifteen per cent below face value, and on general marketplaces and auction sites at similar or larger discounts. The saving is real. So is the risk, and this is where a lot of writing on this subject goes quiet.

How the discount works

Somebody receives a Chipotle card they will not use. They sell it to a reseller for, say, eighty-five per cent of its value. The reseller lists it at ninety-two per cent and keeps the spread. In the honest version of this, everybody wins slightly. The seller converts an unwanted card to cash, the buyer eats for less, and Chipotle has already been paid regardless.

What actually goes wrong

The dishonest version is the reason to be careful. A gift card is a bearer instrument: whoever has the number and the PIN can spend it, and there is no name attached. That creates three specific failure modes.

The card is drained before you use it

The seller keeps a copy of the number. You buy the card, wait a week to use it, and by the time you try, the balance is gone. Some resellers guarantee against this for a limited window, often something like a year, but some marketplaces offer nothing at all beyond a dispute process you have to argue your way through.

The card was bought with a stolen payment method

Cards purchased fraudulently get canceled by the issuer when the original transaction is reversed. The balance vanishes and it is not coming back, because the money was never legitimately paid in the first place. You are not the victim the system is designed to protect here, and you may struggle to recover anything.

The card does not exist

On open marketplaces and in social media selling groups, plain fraud is common. You pay, you receive a photograph of a card or a code that has already been spent, and the seller disappears. Payment sent by bank transfer or a peer-to-peer payment app is effectively unrecoverable.

Things to check before you buy resale

Is there a written guarantee, and how long does it last? The established resellers publish one. Read the actual period and what it requires from you. A guarantee that expires in 45 days is not much use for a card you intend to keep for a birthday.

How are you paying? A credit card gives you a chargeback route. A payment app, a bank transfer, crypto or a gift card used as payment gives you nothing. This single choice is the difference between an annoyance and a loss.

How big is the discount? Five to twelve per cent is the normal market. Forty per cent off a popular restaurant brand is not a bargain, it is a signal. Nobody sells a good card at that price.

Are you buying from a company or a stranger? A registered reseller has a support desk, a dispute process and a reputation to protect. A person in a marketplace listing or a social media group has none of those things.

Can you spend it immediately? The best defense against draining is speed. Check the balance the moment it arrives, and either spend it or transfer it into a Chipotle account the same day. Do not buy a resale card in October for Christmas.

Never buy a resale gift card as a gift for somebody else unless you have verified the balance yourself first. If it fails, it fails in front of the person you were trying to be kind to, usually at the register, and there is no graceful recovery from that.

The reasonable position on resale is this. For your own use, on a card you will spend this week, bought with a credit card from a reputable reseller, the discount is worth having. As a gift, for someone else, with a deadline, it is a bad trade. You are saving three dollars and betting the entire gift on it. If you want to save money at Chipotle in a way that carries no risk at all, the legitimate free food routes and the occasional buy-one-get-one offers are a better use of your attention.

Every source compared

The table below is the compressed version of everything above. Risk level here means the chance of ending up with a card that does not work, not the chance of being defrauded outright.

Last minute, by hours remaining

This is the section most people actually need. Find the row that matches your situation and stop reading.

You have ten minutes

chipotle.com, eGift card, recipient’s email address, send now. Nothing else is fast enough. If you want to hand it over rather than have it appear in their inbox, put your own email in the recipient field and forward it, or screenshot the barcode and send that. It is not elegant but it is a working gift card in the time it takes to wait in wait in line for coffee.

You have an hour and want something physical

Drive to a Chipotle and buy one at the register. Phone first if you can, and check opening hours, because most restaurants open around 10:45 in the morning and close around 10 at night, with earlier closes on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and full closure on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. If the store is out of stock, the nearest large supermarket is the backup.

You have this evening

Supermarket rack first, because you can also buy a card, a bottle of something and a decent greetings card in one trip, which solves the whole gift rather than part of it. If the rack has no Chipotle, buy the eGift from that retailer’s website while standing in the shop and print it at home.

You have two or three days

Any route works, including a physical card mailed from chipotle.com if you pay for faster delivery. This is also the window where a warehouse club multipack becomes interesting, because it is the only route that saves you real money without buying resale.

You have a week or more

Buy from Chipotle directly, choose the physical card, and schedule or post it. Or buy the eGift and schedule it to arrive on the morning of the day, which is the version that makes it look like you remembered rather than reacted.

If the recipient is not near a Chipotle, none of this matters. Chipotle has passed four thousand restaurants and they are heavily concentrated in the United States, but coverage is still patchy in rural areas. Check there is one within a sensible distance before you buy, otherwise you have given somebody a coupon for a journey.

Bulk and corporate gift cards

Buying thirty Chipotle cards for a team is a different job from buying one for a friend, and doing it through the normal store is miserable. Chipotle runs a separate bulk channel for orders of roughly ten cards and up, and it exists because HR departments, sales teams and event organisers buy restaurant cards constantly.

What the bulk route gives you that the retail one does not:

Volume handling

Upload a list of recipients and amounts rather than completing the same form thirty times. Digital codes can go out to everybody at once, or arrive to you as a batch to distribute yourself.

Invoicing and paperwork

Business payment terms, a proper invoice and a record of what was issued. This matters more than it sounds when the purchase has to survive an expense review.

Possible discount

Volume buyers can sometimes get cards below face value, which the retail buyer never sees. The threshold and the rate are set by the program and worth asking about directly.

The two honest warnings. First, lead time. Bulk orders involve account setup, approval and fulfilment, and a first order can take days or longer. Do not discover this the week before the staff party. Second, tax and payroll treatment: in many jurisdictions a gift card given to an employee is treated as cash-equivalent compensation rather than a de minimis gift, and your finance team will want to know about it. That is a conversation to have before you order, not after.

When catering beats gift cards

If the purpose is feeding a team rather than rewarding individuals, gift cards are often the worse buy. Thirty cards means thirty separate trips, thirty people waiting in line on their own time, and a fair number of cards that sit in wallets for months. A catered order arrives, gets eaten, and is finished. It is also usually cheaper per head, because you are buying a build-your-own spread rather than thirty individually priced entrees with guacamole added.

The rough rule is that gift cards suit recognition and catering suits occasions. A thank-you for one person, a spot bonus, a prize, a client gift: card. A launch day, a training session, an office lunch, a celebration where everyone is in the same room: catering. Costs for the second option are broken down in how much it costs to cater Chipotle, and the numbers usually settle the argument quickly.

How much to load on the card

Under-funding a gift card is a common and slightly awkward mistake. Someone hands you a fifteen dollar card, you go in, order what you actually want, and end up paying the difference at the register. The gift becomes a discount. Getting the amount right means knowing what a Chipotle meal costs now, which has moved a fair amount in recent years.

In most United States markets, at the time of writing, a chicken burrito or bowl sits roughly in the ten to twelve dollar range before tax, with steak, barbacoa and carne asada a dollar or two above that. Add guacamole and you are adding roughly two and a half to three dollars. Add chips and queso and you are adding another five or so. Prices vary meaningfully by city, and airport and urban-center locations run higher. The detailed breakdowns live in how much a Chipotle burrito costs, how much a Chipotle bowl costs and the wider how much is Chipotle overview.

Which gives a practical ladder:

AmountWhat it realistically coversGood for
$10Not quite a full entree in most markets once tax is addedTopping up an existing balance, small token
$15One basic entree, no guacamole, no drinkA small thank-you where the gesture is the point
$20One entree with guacamole and a drink, comfortablyThe sensible minimum for a real gift
$25One generous meal with extras, or two very plain onesThe standard gift amount, and the most common rack denomination
$50Two full meals with sides, or four basic entreesA couple, a family, or a proper gift
$100A run of lunches, or a small group mealMilestones, group gifts, staff rewards

Two adjustments. If the person orders double meat, or always gets chips and queso, or drinks a fountain soda every time, push a tier up: those extras add several dollars per visit and the costs are set out in the price guides above. And if the card is going to somebody who orders delivery rather than walking in, add more again, because delivery menus are typically priced higher than in-restaurant menus before any fees are applied, as explained in the Chipotle delivery guide.

If you want to be genuinely thoughtful about it, build the recipient’s usual order in the Chipotle nutrition calculator to see what they actually eat, then round the card up to the next sensible number. And if the person you are buying for is more of a Mediterranean bowl type than a burrito type, the CAVA calorie calculator covers the equivalent chain, where the same portion logic applies.

What to check before you hand it over

Five checks, and they take under two minutes in total. Every one of them exists because somebody has been embarrassed at a register.

Confirm the card is activated

Look at the receipt. It should show the gift card purchase and the amount loaded. If it shows a sale but no activation line, ask the cashier to check before you leave the shop. This is the single most common failure and it is trivially fixable at the counter and painful afterwards.

Check the balance

Do it online or through the app before the card leaves your hands. It takes a minute and it converts hope into fact. The method is covered in the guide to using a Chipotle gift card online.

Inspect the packaging for tampering

On a rack card, look at the back. If the PIN scratch panel has been rubbed, lifted or replaced with a sticker, or the carrier looks resealed, put it back and take a different one from the middle of the rack rather than the front.

Photograph or record the card number

Take a picture of the front and back before you give it away, or write the number down. If the card is lost, a recorded number and the original receipt are the only realistic route to getting the value replaced. Without them there is nothing to trace.

Keep the receipt with the card

Tuck it into the carrier. It costs nothing and it turns a dead card into a solvable problem. If something does go wrong later, Chipotle customer support will ask for exactly these two things.

Buying one with a gift card or with points

Two questions come up constantly here, and the answers are different.

Can you buy a Chipotle gift card with another gift card?

Generally no, and this is deliberate rather than accidental. Gift card to gift card purchases are one of the classic money laundering and fraud routes, so almost every retailer blocks them at checkout. That includes buying a Chipotle card using a Chipotle card, and it usually includes buying a restaurant card with a supermarket’s own store card.

The one that does often work is a general-purpose prepaid card, meaning a Visa, Mastercard or American Express prepaid card with a card number, expiry date and security code. Those behave like debit cards at most checkouts. You may need to register a billing address with the prepaid card issuer before an online purchase will go through, because the address check is what usually causes the decline. In a physical shop it is far more likely to work than online.

Can you buy one with Chipotle Rewards points?

No. Points are for redeeming against food in the rewards catalogue, not for buying stored value. The two systems are separate ledgers and they do not convert into each other. Points also have their own timing rules, which are set out in do Chipotle points expire, and a balance that is quietly counting down is worth spending rather than saving.

What does connect the two is the reverse direction. Buying a gift card sometimes comes with a promotional bonus, most often around the holidays, where a purchase over a certain value earns you a bonus card or a free entree code. Those campaigns are announced by Chipotle rather than by retailers, they run for short windows, and they are the only reliable way to get more than face value out of a straightforward purchase.

Gift card scams, both kinds

Restaurant gift cards attract two completely different scams. They are worth separating because the defenses are not the same.

The drained card

Someone takes cards from a shop rack, records the numbers and PINs, repackages them and puts them back. When a customer buys one and loads it with money, the criminal spends the balance before the recipient gets round to using it. Sometimes the cards are simply photographed at the register by a bystander. The result is a card that was genuinely activated and genuinely paid for, and is genuinely empty.

Defenses: take cards from the back of the rack, inspect the packaging, check the balance immediately after purchase, and spend or register the card quickly rather than leaving it dormant for months. Buying in a Chipotle restaurant sidesteps this almost entirely, because the stock lives behind the counter rather than on an open display.

The impersonation scam

This is the more damaging one. Somebody contacts you claiming to be your employer, a government agency, a utility company, a tech support desk or a relative in trouble, and tells you to pay by buying gift cards and reading out the numbers. Restaurant cards are used alongside retail ones because they are easy to buy and hard to trace.

No legitimate organization will ever ask you to pay a bill, a fine, a tax debt or a fee with restaurant gift cards. Not the tax authority, not the police, not your bank, not a utility, not your boss. Anyone who does is a criminal, and the moment the numbers are read out the money is gone. If you have already done it, keep the cards and receipts, contact the card issuer immediately, and report it to your national consumer protection body.

A useful test if a request feels off: legitimate organizations do not care what payment method you use, and they will happily wait while you verify who they are. Scammers create urgency and object to you hanging up and phoning back on a published number. Urgency plus a demand for a specific untraceable payment method is the pattern, and it works on far more people than you would expect.

Buying from outside the United States

Chipotle gift cards are structured around the United States market, and that creates friction if you are buying from elsewhere or buying for somebody abroad. Three points worth knowing.

A card is generally tied to the country whose program issued it. A card bought in the United States is intended to be spent in United States restaurants, and the small international estate, in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, is run separately with its own currency and often its own gift card arrangements. Do not assume a dollar card will be accepted in London or Toronto. If in doubt, ask the specific restaurant before buying.

Payment can also block you. Chipotle’s own store often requires a billing address in the country it serves, so an international card may simply decline. The workaround people use is to ask somebody in the destination country to buy the card and send you the code, which also removes the currency question entirely.

And the practical alternative, if you are trying to treat somebody who lives near one of the international restaurants, is to buy in that restaurant itself, or to check whether Chipotle’s site for that market sells cards at all. Coverage outside the United States is thin, and there is no shame in giving cash and a note saying what it is for.

Questions people actually ask

The same handful of questions come up every time somebody goes looking for one of these cards. Here they are with straight answers.

Where can I buy a Chipotle gift card?

You can buy one directly from chipotle.com, either as an eGift card delivered by email or as a physical card mailed to an address. You can also buy a physical card at the register inside any Chipotle restaurant, and you will often find them on the gift card racks at large supermarkets, pharmacies, big box stores and warehouse clubs. Several major retailers sell Chipotle eGift cards on their websites too. Availability at third party stores varies by region and changes without notice, so call the specific store if you need one today.

Does Chipotle sell gift cards in store?

Yes. Every Chipotle restaurant sells physical gift cards at the register, and this is the fastest way to get a plastic card in your hand. Ask the cashier rather than anyone on the serving line, tell them the amount you want, and they will load the card when you pay. You can usually choose any value above a small minimum rather than being restricted to preset tiers. The card only becomes worth money once the payment goes through, so wait for the receipt and keep it with the card.

Can I buy a Chipotle gift card at Walmart or Target?

Both chains commonly carry restaurant gift cards including Chipotle, in store on the gift card rack and on their websites as digital eGift cards. Neither is guaranteed at every store, because rack stock is managed locally and popular restaurant brands sell out. Check the retailer’s website first, since most large chains show gift cards as products and many offer instant email delivery of the digital version. If the shelf is empty when you get there, buying the eGift card online from the same retailer usually solves it.

Do supermarkets sell Chipotle gift cards?

Large grocery chains are the most likely third party source, and Chipotle appears regularly on their gift card racks alongside other restaurant brands. Kroger, Safeway and Albertsons stores, Publix, Meijer, Giant Eagle, H-E-B and Wegmans are all reasonable places to look. Supermarkets are also where gift card promotions turn up, such as bonus fuel points or store credit when you spend a certain amount on cards. Stock is decided store by store, so call the store and ask them to check the rack before you drive over.

How fast does a Chipotle eGift card arrive?

An eGift card bought on chipotle.com normally reaches the recipient’s inbox within a few minutes. That makes it the fastest route by a wide margin and the only one that works when you have almost no time left. eGift cards bought through large retailer websites are usually quick too, though some hold new orders briefly for fraud checks, which can add a few hours. If you want to control the exact moment it lands, send it to your own email address and forward it yourself, or schedule the delivery date.

What is the smallest Chipotle gift card you can buy?

Ten dollars is the usual floor, both on Chipotle’s own store and at the register in a restaurant. Rack cards at third party stores tend to come in fixed tiers instead, most commonly twenty-five and fifty dollars, with ten dollar cards less widely stocked. Ten dollars will not quite cover a full entree with tax in most markets at current prices, so treat it as a top-up rather than a meal. Twenty dollars is a more realistic minimum if you want the card to buy an actual lunch.

Can I buy a Chipotle gift card with another gift card?

Usually not. Retailers block gift card to gift card purchases at checkout because that chain of transactions is heavily used for fraud and money laundering, so you cannot normally buy a Chipotle card using another Chipotle card or a store card. General purpose prepaid cards are the exception. A Visa, Mastercard or American Express prepaid card with a number, expiry date and security code behaves like a debit card in most registers. Register a billing address with the prepaid issuer first, or online purchases will often decline.

Can I buy a Chipotle gift card with Chipotle Rewards points?

No. Points and gift cards are separate systems and they do not convert into each other. Points are redeemed against food in the rewards catalogue, while a gift card is stored value you buy with money. The connection runs the other way instead: Chipotle sometimes runs promotions, most often around the holidays, where buying a gift card above a certain value earns you a bonus card or a free entree code. Those campaigns are announced by Chipotle, run for short windows, and are the only reliable way to beat face value.

Are discounted Chipotle gift cards safe to buy?

They carry real risk. Established resale sites sell genuine unwanted cards at a modest discount, typically five to fifteen per cent, and most offer a limited guarantee. The danger is cards that get drained after you buy them, or cards bought with stolen payment details that the issuer later cancels. Pay by credit card so you have a chargeback route, buy only from a company with a published guarantee, check the balance the moment it arrives, and spend it quickly. Avoid resale entirely when the card is a gift for someone else.

Can I buy a Chipotle gift card outside the United States?

It is difficult. Chipotle’s gift card program is built around the United States market and its own store often requires a billing address in the country it serves, so an overseas payment card may be declined. The small international estate in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates runs separately with its own currency, and a dollar card should not be assumed to work there. The simplest fix is to ask someone in the destination country to buy the card and send you the code.

Do Chipotle gift cards work for delivery orders?

In most cases a Chipotle gift card works on orders placed through Chipotle’s own website and app, including delivery ordered that way, because the payment is still processed by Chipotle. Orders placed inside a third party delivery app are a different matter, since those apps take payment through their own systems and generally will not accept a restaurant gift card. If the card is meant to cover delivery, load more onto it, because delivery menu prices are typically higher than in-restaurant prices before any fees are added.

How do I check a Chipotle gift card balance?

You can check the balance on Chipotle’s gift card page by entering the card number and PIN, in the Chipotle app once the card is added to your account, or by asking at the counter in any restaurant. Do this immediately after buying a card and again before you hand it over as a gift, since it turns an assumption into a fact and takes about a minute. Keep the receipt and a photograph of the card number as well, because those are what support will ask for if anything goes wrong.

The quick version

Buy the eGift card on chipotle.com if you need it now, because it arrives in minutes and can be scheduled for a future date with a written message attached. Buy a physical card at the register inside any Chipotle if you want something to hand over today. Check the gift card rack at a large supermarket, pharmacy, warehouse club or big box store if a restaurant is not convenient, but call ahead, because rack stock is decided locally and Chipotle is a brand that sells out. Twenty-five dollars is the sensible standard amount and twenty is the realistic floor. Treat discounted resale cards with caution, pay by credit card if you use them, and never buy one as a gift without checking the balance first.
