The evidence, not the vibes
Yes, for most purposes. If you are an adult reading for pleasure or general interest, listening counts, and the comprehension evidence broadly backs that up. A 2016 study of 91 adults found no significant difference between listening to a chapter and reading it, either immediately or two weeks later, and brain imaging work at Berkeley found the semantic maps your cortex builds are close to identical either way. So log the hours, add them to your total, and run them through the audiobook speed calculator if you want the arithmetic on how long the next one takes. The answer has real edges, though, and the edges matter more than the headline. Print beats audio on inferential questions, on anything with diagrams or equations, on material you need to reread, and on the one job audio cannot do at all: teaching a developing reader to decode words on a page.
What follows is the research, named and dated, including the studies that do not favor audio. Every finding was checked against the published paper, and where a study used lecture material or undergraduates instead of novels and ordinary readers, that is stated.
Two arguments hide inside this question and they get tangled constantly. The first is empirical: do you understand and remember a book you listened to as well as one you read? That has data behind it. The second is social: are you entitled to say you read it? That has none, because it is a question about status and manners. Keeping them apart makes the whole thing easier. How many hours is that book, really?

A note on what is being compared. Almost every study here pits listening to a short text against reading a short text, in a lab, with a quiz afterward. Very few compare finishing a fourteen hour novel by ear against finishing it in print over three weeks. That gap is the real limit on all of it, and the researchers say so themselves.
What the comprehension research found
Four bodies of work carry this argument: a well-known experiment, a meta-analysis that deserves far more airtime than it gets, a pair of brain imaging studies from Berkeley, and a classroom study that came out the other way.
The 2016 experiment everybody quotes
Beth Rogowsky, Barbara Calhoun and Paula Tallal published this in SAGE Open in 2016 under the title “Does Modality Matter?” They recruited 91 college-educated adults between 25 and 40, all native English speakers, and split them three ways: audiobook, e-text, or both at once. The text was the preface and chapter 17 of Unbroken, Laura Hillenbrand’s World War II survival narrative, running 3,184 words. Everyone took the same 48-question multiple-choice test in written form, once immediately and again after two weeks.
The result: no statistically significant difference between any of the three conditions at either time point. What did predict scores was individual comprehension aptitude. Reading ability travels with the person, not the format.
Three limitations to hold onto. The material was 3,184 words of gripping narrative nonfiction, roughly twenty minutes of listening and about the friendliest possible case for audio. The participants were educated adults with fluent decoding. And the test was multiple choice, which measures recognition more than the understanding you would need to argue with the book. It does not prove that a 900-page history of the Ottoman Empire lands the same way through headphones.
The meta-analysis that should be quoted instead
Virginia Clinton-Lisell published “Listening Ears or Reading Eyes” in Review of Educational Research in 2022, pooling 46 studies covering 4,687 participants. This is the most useful piece of evidence available on the question, and its headline number is exactly what audiobook defenders claim: the overall difference between reading and listening was g = 0.07, not statistically reliable.
Then the moderators start talking, and they are less comfortable. On literal comprehension, questions with answers sitting on the surface of the text, the two formats were indistinguishable. On inferential comprehension, questions requiring you to combine two things the author never joined up for you, reading came out ahead by g = 0.36, and that difference was significant.
The other moderator is pacing, and it is the most practical finding on this page. Reading beat listening when readers set their own pace. When the experimenter controlled the reading condition, so print readers were pushed along at a fixed clip like a listener, the reading advantage vanished and the effect nudged the other way. That points straight at the mechanism. What print gives you is not a better channel into the brain. It is control. You slow down without deciding to, you reread the sentence that did not land, your eye flicks up the page to check who said what. Audio removes that by default, a design problem and not a biological one.

What the brain scans show, and what they do not
The neuroscience gets shared with a triumphant caption, so state it carefully. Fatma Deniz, Anwar Nunez-Elizalde, Alexander Huth and Jack Gallant published in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2019 under a title that gives the game away: the representation of semantic information across human cerebral cortex during listening versus reading is invariant to stimulus modality.
The method matters more than the headline. Nine participants, aged 24 to 36, spent over two hours in an fMRI scanner in each condition, taking in ten narrative stories from The Moth Radio Hour, once by ear and once by eye. The researchers built voxelwise encoding models, a statistical map of which patch of cortex responds to which kinds of meaning. Then the key test: a model trained on listening data predicted the brain’s response to reading, and the reverse held too. The semantic maps were near identical, and they covered most of the cortex, not a small language patch. A follow-up from largely the same group, by Catherine Chen and colleagues in Communications Biology in 2024, found that timescale selectivity, the way different regions specialize in words versus sentences versus whole story arcs, also correlates between the two formats within each individual.
What these studies do not show. Nine people is nine people, all fluent adult readers, all taking in well-produced narrative stories. Near-identical semantic maps prove that meaning arrives, a claim about the channel. They say nothing about whether you retain it, reason about it a week later, or whether the same holds for a statistics textbook. Anyone citing Deniz 2019 to close the argument is overselling a careful paper.
The study that came out the other way
David Daniel and William Woody published “They Hear, but Do Not Listen” in Teaching of Psychology in 2010. Students in a higher education setting either read a primary source or listened to it as a podcast, then took a quiz. The podcast group scored worse. There is a nice human detail in the results: students said they preferred the podcast beforehand and changed their minds immediately after seeing their scores. The authors concluded that podcasts work as enrichment on top of the reading, not as a replacement.
The fair reading: this was class material studied for a grade, not a novel enjoyed on a walk. Students reading a text take notes, stop, back up and go at their own speed, and students listening to a podcast in 2010 mostly did not. Its scope is study behavior, not comprehension in the abstract. Reading is two skills stacked, and audio works one of them
Everything above makes more sense with the framework reading researchers use. Philip Gough and William Tunmer set it out in 1986 in Remedial and Special Education, in a paper called “Decoding, Reading, and Reading Disability.” It is known as the Simple View of Reading, and it is close to the most durable idea in the field.

Language comprehension is understanding words once you have them, the same machinery you use to follow a conversation. Reading is the product of the two, and the model describes three failure patterns: readers who cannot decode, readers who decode fine but do not understand, and readers with both problems.
Now apply that to headphones. An audiobook hands you the second factor and removes the first. For a fluent adult that costs nothing, because your decoding has been automatic since you were about nine and takes no conscious effort. Skipping a step you were doing for free is not a loss. For a child still building that step, skipping it is the entire problem, because decoding only becomes automatic through practice on print.
You can watch that play out across grade levels. Irene-Anna Diakidoy and colleagues published a study in Reading Psychology in 2005 testing listening and reading comprehension in grades 2, 4, 6 and 8, using narrative and expository text. In second grade, listening comprehension beat reading comprehension, and the advantage showed up for narrative text specifically. By fourth and sixth grade the two had converged. By eighth grade, reading came out higher. The crossover tracks decoding becoming effortless: once a child stops spending working memory on the words themselves, print starts handing back its own advantages.
What audio does build, at any age
Vocabulary, sentence structure, background knowledge, narrative sense, the rhythm of written prose, tolerance for long-form attention, and appetite. All of these feed the language comprehension side of the equation, and all of them transfer to print reading later.
What audio cannot build
Letter-sound mapping, orthographic memory for how words look, spelling, reading fluency and stamina on a page, and the eye-movement habits that make skimming and rereading possible. None of these are exercised by listening, because none are involved.
Anisha Singh and Patricia Alexander reviewed 32 studies for Educational Psychology Review in 2022 and found audiobooks alone outperforming print for younger students, with effect sizes from .28 to .58. For struggling readers and English language learners, the strongest results came from pairing audio with the printed text, with effects as large as 1.67. They also flagged the gap in the literature: hardly anyone has directly compared audiobook listening to print reading in older students without identified learning needs, and hardly anyone has tested expository text. A polite way of saying the evidence base for adults reading serious nonfiction by ear is thinner than the confident takes suggest.
The reading-along finding has a use for adults too. Amazon sells the Kindle edition and the Audible edition of many titles with synced position, and some editions highlight the text as the narrator speaks. Where listening loses, and it does lose
An article that only lists the wins is a pep talk, and pep talks change no one’s mind. Here is the case against audio, drawn from the same evidence as the case for it. Six places where the format costs you something measurable.
You cannot look back without breaking stride
This is the big one, and the meta-analysis points right at it. When print readers set their own pace they beat listeners. Force them along at a fixed clip and the advantage disappears. The difference is not eyes versus ears, it is the ability to stop. A page lets you reread a sentence in half a second without registering that you did it. Backing up thirty seconds in an app is a deliberate act, it costs a beat of momentum, and it lands you somewhere approximate instead of on the clause you missed. So you do it less than you should. Inferential questions get harder
The clearest single number here is g = 0.36 favoring reading on inferential comprehension, where the answer is written down nowhere and you build it from two things sitting forty pages apart. Literal recall came out level across formats. Inference did not.
Why is not settled, but the pacing story explains most of it. Inference needs slack, a half second where attention leaves the incoming stream and joins two pieces together. A page waits for you. A narrator does not, and by the time you come back you have lost a sentence. That cost lands hardest on exactly the books people feel guiltiest about listening to: arguments, philosophy, anything where the author is building a case.
Anything that lives on the page
No study needed here, only common sense that publishers routinely ignore. Audio cannot carry a diagram, a table, a graph, a map, an equation, a family tree or a footnote. Narrators handle these by reading the caption, saying “see the accompanying PDF,” or skipping them, and almost no one opens that PDF while driving. Where it bites hardest: economics and finance, popular science with charts, history with maps, cookbooks, programming, textbooks of any kind, and translated classics where the footnotes carry half the meaning.
Your mind wanders more
Trish Varao Sousa, Jonathan Carriere and Daniel Smilek published a study in Frontiers in Psychology in 2013 comparing three ways of taking in the same passages from Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything: reading aloud, reading silently, and listening. They interrupted participants with probes asking whether attention was still on the text, then tested memory.
Reading aloud produced the least mind wandering. Silent reading came second. Listening produced the most, and listeners also showed the poorest memory performance. The ordering makes sense: reading aloud occupies your mouth and eyes, silent reading your eyes, listening leaves everything but your ears free to go elsewhere. The freedom that makes audiobooks useful while you fold laundry is the same freedom that lets attention drift during a slow chapter. Reading in a second language
Speech does not come with spaces between the words. A reader working in a second language gets word boundaries free on the page and can stop on an unfamiliar term without losing the thread. A listener gets a continuous stream at the narrator’s pace and loses the sentence while decoding one unfamiliar word inside it. Clinton-Lisell picked up a hint of a related effect across writing systems, with transparent orthographies showing no gap and opaque ones like English showing a small reading advantage. The strongest finding here is not that listening is bad for learners, though. It is that pairing audio with printed text beats either alone.
Developing readers, again
Worth repeating, because this is the one part of the debate where guilt is warranted, just aimed at the wrong person. If you are an adult, listening is fine. If you are choosing what a seven-year-old does with their evenings, audiobooks build vocabulary and appetite but not decoding, so they belong alongside print practice and not instead of it. Where audio wins outright
Now the other direction, and some of these are not close either. There are readers and books for whom audio is no compromise but the better version of the text.
Accessibility, which is where audiobooks came from
The format did not start as a convenience product. Congress passed the Pratt-Smoot Act on 3 March 1931, creating the Books for the Adult Blind program, and talking books were circulating by 1934 on discs holding about half an hour a side. Recorded books existed for a specific reason: some people cannot read print, and the alternative to listening was not reading, it was nothing.
That history answers the “does it count” question on its own. If listening does not count as reading, blind readers have never read a book, an absurd position no one defends out loud. For readers with dyslexia the case is nearly as strong. Alessandra Milani, Maria Luisa Lorusso and Massimo Molteni published a study in the journal Dyslexia in 2010 on audiobook use among Italian pre-adolescents and adolescents with dyslexia, and their choice of measure is telling: not only reading outcomes but psychosocial adjustment, meaning how those students felt about school and about themselves. For someone who reads accurately at a third of the speed of their classmates, audio removes a tax unrelated to understanding the book.
A narrator makes decisions you would have made badly
Prose on a page is underspecified. Stress, rhythm, timing, where the irony sits, which of two readings of an ambiguous line is the real one: none of that is written down. Your inner voice supplies it and often gets it wrong on a first pass. A good narrator has read the whole book, discussed it with a director, and made every one of those calls deliberately. So a well-narrated audiobook can be clearer than the page wherever voice carries meaning. Sarcasm reads flat in print and lands immediately in audio. Difficult prose, dialect and verse
Some texts are hard on the page for reasons that evaporate in audio. Dialect written phonetically slows a reader to a crawl and sounds natural spoken. Verse drama has meter a narrator delivers and a silent reader must reconstruct. Nineteenth-century sentences with six subordinate clauses parse better when someone else handles the punctuation.
There is a bigger point buried in that list. Written literature is a recent technology sitting on top of a much older oral one, and epic poetry was performed for centuries before anyone wrote it down. Treating the printed version as the real one and the spoken version as a lesser copy gets the history backwards for a large chunk of the canon. Books read by their author
Memoir read by the person it happened to is a different artifact from the printed book, usually a better one. The pauses are not performance choices, they are the author deciding how much to say. Comedians reading their own material get the timing right because the timing is the material. Here the audio edition is arguably the primary text and print the abridgement, the opposite of what the guilt assumes. On that word, what unabridged means is worth checking before you buy.
The emotional engagement finding, with its caveat attached
In 2018 Joseph Devlin’s team at University College London measured heart rate, body temperature and skin conductance in 102 participants aged 18 to 55 while they listened to audiobook excerpts or watched matched film and television scenes of similar genre and intensity. Audio produced stronger and more consistent physiological arousal than the screen versions, and participants underestimated their own engagement afterward. Now the caveat, because leaving it out would be dishonest: the study was commissioned by Audible through UCL Consultants and posted as a preprint. A result funded by an audiobook company showing audiobooks are gripping deserves more skepticism than one from an independent lab, and the comparison was against video, not print.
The comparison that decides it for most readers
Every argument above compares listening to reading. Real life poses a different comparison: listening versus not reading the book at all. Commuting, the gym, a dog walk, a sink full of dishes. None of those hours are available for print, and if audio converts three hundred otherwise dead hours a year into finished books, a small inference penalty is a rounding error against zero. Pace, speed and what sticks
One number reframes this debate, and it is why a lot of readers find audio slow. Marc Brysbaert’s 2019 meta-analysis, pooling 190 studies of reading rate, put adult silent reading of nonfiction at roughly 238 to 260 words a minute. Professional narration sits around 150 to 160, because that is the pace at which speech stays clear and expressive.

On retention over time there is far less evidence than anyone would like. Rogowsky’s two-week delayed test found no difference between formats, and that is close to the only decent long-interval comparison in the literature. One study, one text, one delay. Everything else measures comprehension within minutes of finishing. If someone tells you audiobooks fade faster, ask which study. Runtime expectations help too, since much of the “audio takes forever” feeling is that a typical commercial audiobook runs eight to thirteen hours, broken down by genre in how long the average audiobook is.
The practical verdict: a rule you can use tonight
Strip the studies down to something you can apply while browsing a store page and it comes to one question. Does this book depend on control, or on voice? Control means rereading, cross-referencing, looking at something on the page. Voice means character, rhythm, humor, momentum. Books that depend on control belong in print, books that depend on voice are often better in audio, and most titles lean one way clearly enough that you know within a chapter.
Two habits make the audio side of that table work better. Drop your speed on hard passages instead of tolerating a fog, and rewind more freely than pride allows, because self-pacing is where the print advantage lives. Give the narrator fifteen minutes, not two. Sample clips come from the start of a book, where the reader is still warming up. Plenty of listeners bounced off one bad narrator and blamed the format.
Listen to hard books twice, at different speeds. A first pass at 1.5x for shape and a second at 1.0x for the parts that matter beats one slow pass, and costs nothing extra.
Pair audio with print for anything you are studying. The largest effect sizes in the literature come from the two together, not from either alone.
Can you say you read it? Yes.
Here is the position, stated without hedging, because this is the question doing the real work when someone types it into a search box at eleven at night.
If you finished a book by listening to it, you read it, and you may say so. You engaged with the complete unabridged text, you followed the argument or the story from beginning to end, and the evidence says you understood it about as well as a print reader would have. Saying “I read it” is accurate. If the format is relevant to the conversation, mention it, the same way you would mention that you read a translation.
The word “read” has never been tied to a single channel. Braille readers read. A parent reads to a child, and the child, listening, has read the book by any sane account of the phrase. Scholars read manuscripts aloud for most of the history of literacy, and silent reading was unusual enough in the ancient world that observers wrote about it with surprise. Defining reading as silent visual decoding by one person is a recent convention, not something handed down.
Mention the format when it changes what you can claim. If you are quoting a book or arguing about a passage, the person you are talking to should know you did not have the page in front of you. Not because listening is lesser, but because you cannot flip back to check and they can. A note about precision, not a confession.
The people who insist otherwise are defending something other than comprehension. Status attaches to being someone who reads books, that status was earned by an activity that used to be effortful, and audio makes it look easy. The effort was never the point. The book was. Someone who finished twenty audiobooks last year has read twenty books, and someone with twenty unread hardbacks on a shelf has read none.
One place to be careful. If a book club, a course or an exam requires close work with a text, listening alone is weaker preparation and you should know that going in. That is a practical limit about page access, and it applies as much to reading on a cracked phone screen in bad light. It says nothing about whether listening counts.
Mistakes made on both sides of this argument

Citing the Berkeley brain scans as if they end it
Nine adults listening to radio stories in a scanner. The finding is that meaning arrives through both channels and is filed in the same places. It does not measure retention, difficulty, or what happens at the chart in chapter nine.
Citing the podcast study as if it ends it the other way
Daniel and Woody tested course material studied for a grade against a group who could take notes and reread. That is evidence about study behavior, and the authors framed podcasts as enrichment rather than replacement.
Assuming the child evidence applies to adults
Audiobooks beat print for younger students in Singh and Alexander’s review. Those numbers come from readers whose decoding is not yet automatic, and they tell you nothing about a 40-year-old with a commute.
Assuming the adult evidence applies to children
The reverse error, and the more damaging one. No amount of listening builds letter-sound mapping. A child who only listens gets one factor of the Simple View and is starved of the other.
Treating all books as one category
The format question has different answers for a Dickens novel and a linear algebra text. Anyone giving one answer for both has stopped thinking. The material decides, not the medium.
Never touching the speed control, then blaming the format
At 1.0x you are moving at roughly 60 percent of your reading rate. Of course it feels slow. Fixing it takes ten seconds and many listeners never try.
Who should listen, and who should stay on the page
Audio is a good fit if you
Have commuting, walking, gym or chore hours that print cannot reach. Read mostly fiction, memoir or narrative nonfiction. Find dense prose easier when someone else handles the punctuation. Have dyslexia, low vision, or any condition that makes print effortful. Struggle to sit still with a book but follow a story with no trouble.
Stay with print if you
Read mainly technical, statistical or diagram-heavy material. Annotate as a habit and use those notes later. Are studying for an exam or teaching from the text. Are reading in a language you are still learning, unless you pair it with the page. Find your attention drifts within minutes of pressing play.
Plenty of readers land in both columns depending on the book, which is the correct answer and not a fence-sitting one. One person can listen to novels on the train and read the economics book at a desk with a pencil, and neither choice needs defending.

Audiobooks and reading: frequently asked questions
Do audiobooks count toward a reading challenge or a yearly book goal?
Every major platform that tracks yearly totals accepts them, and library summer programs have logged listening for decades. The only binding rule is the one you set. If the goal was finishing books, a finished audiobook qualifies. If the goal was building a habit of sitting with a page, logging a title you heard while driving defeats what you wanted.
Do teachers and schools treat listening as reading?
It varies by purpose. For independent reading logs, book reports and enrichment, audio is widely accepted. For phonics instruction, guided reading groups and fluency assessment it is not, since those exercises target word-level skills that headphones bypass. Formal accommodations for students with print disabilities are a third category, legally recognized in the United States.
Are audiobooks as good for your brain as reading?
For extracting and storing meaning, the imaging work says the machinery is close to the same. What differs is what else gets exercised. Print rehearses visual word recognition, spelling memory and the eye habits behind skimming. Audio rehearses auditory attention and following extended speech. Different muscles, and neither is doing nothing.
Why can I never remember what happened in an audiobook?
Usually one of three things. You were in traffic or doing something that demanded attention, so the book was competing rather than being heard. Or the speed sat where a fast section stopped being followable. Or the book was structurally hard, with a large cast or a jumbled timeline. Try a simpler title somewhere quieter before blaming your memory.
Is listening to an audiobook cheating?
Cheating implies a rule and a victim, and there is neither. The comparison people carry is a nineteenth-century one where reading was scarce and effortful, and effort stood in for seriousness. Difficulty was never the value. If you want the exercise of sustained visual attention, print delivers it, but that is a preference, not a moral standard.
Do audiobooks count as reading for children?
For vocabulary, story sense, background knowledge and appetite for long narratives, yes, and the research on younger students is warm about them. For learning to turn letters into sounds, no, since that skill is trained only on print. Listening is real literacy input, print practice is a separate requirement, and both need slots in the week.
Does listening build vocabulary the way reading does?
It builds spoken vocabulary and meaning, since the words arrive in context either way. What it cannot supply is the visual form of the word, which is why lifelong listeners sometimes know a term perfectly and mispronounce or misspell it. Written exposure carries orthographic information speech does not contain.
Is print better than audio for nonfiction?
Depends which nonfiction. Narrative history, biography and reported journalism travel well by ear, and the 2016 experiment used exactly that material and found no gap. Anything argumentative, statistical or reference-shaped travels badly, since you cannot flip back to the definition three chapters ago. Sort roughly by whether the book has pictures in it.
Do audiobooks count for a book club?
For discussion, absolutely, and listeners often bring sharper impressions of tone and character voice than page readers. The disadvantage is quoting, arguing about a sentence, or finding the passage someone else referenced. If your group works closely with the text, skimming a print or ebook copy before the meeting closes the gap in twenty minutes.
Does it still count if I listen at double speed?
If you followed the book, yes. Speed is a separate variable from format and the evidence on it is narrower than people assume, since the most-cited study used lecture video rather than fiction. The self-check: constant rewinding, or reaching chapter ends with no idea what happened, means the speed is wrong for that title.
Can audiobooks replace print entirely?
For an adult reading fiction and general nonfiction for pleasure, they carry most of the load at little cost. What erodes over years is fluency practice on the page, which fades slowly like any skill, plus access to whole categories of book that will never work as audio. A mixed diet protects both.
Are audiobooks helpful for dyslexia?
They remove a bottleneck that has nothing to do with intelligence or comprehension, which is why they are a standard accommodation. The strongest results in the literature come from listening while following the printed text, the pairing that produced the largest effect sizes of anything reviewed.
Is reading while listening better than doing either alone?
For struggling readers and language learners the reviewed evidence says yes, by a wide margin. For fluent adult readers the picture is murkier, and the 2016 study found the dual condition no better than either format alone. Where it reliably helps a confident reader is difficult syntax, unfamiliar names, or an unusually slow text.
What is the strongest argument against audiobooks?
That you cannot easily go back. Pooled results put the print advantage in self-paced conditions and in questions requiring inference, exactly what you would expect if the benefit is control rather than channel. Everything else in the case against audio is about children learning to decode, about visual content, or about status.
The quick version
Listening counts. A meta-analysis of 46 studies covering 4,687 people found no reliable overall difference in comprehension between reading and listening, a 2016 experiment on 91 adults found none at two-week retention either, and fMRI work at Berkeley found the brain builds near-identical semantic maps whichever way the words arrive. Enough to retire the guilt.
The exceptions are specific. Print wins on inferential questions, wins whenever you benefit from setting your own pace, and wins outright on anything with a diagram, a table, an equation or a footnote. Audio wins on voice-led writing, on dialect and verse, on author-read memoir, and for anyone who finds print effortful through vision or dyslexia. And it wins the comparison that governs a real week: against not reading the book at all.
